5 mile commute? I'd get a bicycle.

Mine was underwater during Typhoon Moracot for about 24 hrs but didn't seem to come to much harm.

My thoughts exactly. Nissan has a real reputation for below average quality. The Titan is no exception. Earlier Titan's also have a reputation for very poor fuel economy. They were tuned for power over economy. If you need the power, great. If not, it really sucks at the pump.

While Dodge isn't known for real good quality either, it is at least on par with the Nissan in this area. And the lower mileage and better condition will really help also. The Dodge engine will get you better fuel economy than the Nissan.

If you plan on keeping it for a long time, maintenance on the Dodge will be easier also. Parts are always going to be plentiful and easily obtainable. This is not always true for a Nissan. Keep in mind that in 2007, Dodge sold 358k Ram trucks. Nissan sold under 66k Titan trucks. Which one is it going to be easier to find a part for?

Drive them both if you can, and then go from there

I do need a truck for occasional hauling , and trips to the beach

Beater? LOL, thats what I have now. A 2000 Ford Escort. Trying to upgrade after the flood. My two good vehicles are gone.

It was free. Certainly not something I would have chosen, but still, free. LOL.

Bicycles can't keep up with interstate highway speeds. I can't pedal at 75 MPH. Even if I could, I would likely be road kill on day one.

Out of those two (I can’t believe I am about to type this) I’d buy the Dodge (gulp).

Lower mileage and better condition.

I’m guessing you are in a sellers market right now so great deals may be hard to find, I would also guess vehicles are being “imported” from all over, while I’m not a huge CarFax fan, it will at least tell you if the truck came from a salt state.

Not a fan of either truck, but I think if I had to choose, for my own use, I'd take the RAM. I've heard good and bad about Ram trucks, and what little I've heard about Nissan full size trucks has been almost uniformly bad. A Nissan Frontier, I'd be all over that, but not a Titan.

No real evidence, no direct experience, just going with my gut.

Thanks everyone. Both have been scratched from contention. I am going to up my price range to around 10K, and find something better.

Ok I will bite. How was it free?

Long story, very condensed:

I needed massive plumbing job done. Contractor who owned the Escort offered to do the job for my old '98 Ford truck. I agreed. At last minuet, he decided to "throw in" the Escort, even though it was not part of the deal. I took it.

Indeed. So have millions of other folks. Despite the rampant idiocy stated earlier the RAM is a good truck.

I really liked the Ram. The problem was that we verbally agreed on a price over the phone then after we drove in with cash in hand, the "manager said" they needed another $500. WRONG. I walked.

A real nice guy was selling the Titan, but it would have needed too much work. CEL light for the canister solenoid, muffler, and torn seat fabric. None were any big deal, but all three together made me pass.

Still shopping...

Found one. Its a "one owner" 2005 Chevy Silverado LS Crew Cab. Hunter green, 140K miles. 5.3L V8. It appears to be in absolutely excellent condition. I know the mileage is a bit high but my daughters 2000 Silverado's 5.3 has 270K miles on it and is still going strong, so 140K miles does not concern me. His asking price was $8700, we negotiated it down to $7800. The truck needs nothing repaired that I can tell.

This truck, along with the new 2017 Ford Fiesta SE I just bought for $14,500, completes restoring my vehicles lost to Harvey flooding, for just a little over $20K.

2017 Ford Fiesta $14,500
2005 Silverado $7,800
Insurance paid -$4,500
--------------------------
Out of pocket $17,800

I am happy how it all turned out.
