A relative has a mazda mx-6 auto. He said the car would not move so he takes it to the transmission shop. They change the fluid and filter and now it runs fine. The fluid had never been changed and had at least 120,000 miles on it. Did the fluid just get to thick to flow? The filter was not blocked. Temps had been in the low teens when this problem arose. I do not know if the transmission was flushed out but i will suggest that he put in some transmission rx and change the fluid out after a few thousand miles provided it doesnt shoot craps by then.

Strange it wouldn't move at all. I guess its possible that somehow he lost all of his transmission fluid, or someother way the fluid wasn't making it into the torque converter, which would cause it not to move at all.

Remember, ATF is alot more than a lubricant, the transmission can't fuction at all without, its needed for actual power delivery, changing gears, cooling, and lubrication.

I think you guys hit on two possible causes:

Fluid was so oxidized that the viscosity probably was 50 weight (or worse) and cold weather made pumping the fluid almost impossible.

I'm surprised he hasn't had more problems by 120k. That transmission, shared with the probe and 626 is known for a lot of problems.

The probability is that just the new oil will, in a matter of days or maybe a 2 weeks, clean out so much varnish that he will need a second change. Then maybe it is a candidate for autoRx or something. But if it was really bad, it won't be in long enough right now.

Having just worked on my son's girlfriend 626 I have found out two things. 1/ Mazda parts are real expensive and 2/ the 626 auto has a poor history particularly in the 1994-2001 years. Many people have changed their transmissions several times and it wasn't cheap to do so either. Poor design, but it appears a cooler may help and regular oil changes (not 120,000!) Other than that sell the car. Do a google and you will glad it isnt yours.

BTW: Also check the throttle position sensor and the linkages.
