More lead content is a result of them using virgin mined lead with a high purity percentage instead of using recycled lead from old batteries. That is what Odyssey said on the Modern Marvel program on the Discovery Channel the other day.

Just put in a new Energizer-branded battery in the Sunfire. Starts excellent now, as we go below 10F overnight. It replaced the factory AC-Delco that went dud on me (long time of no use, very cold nights, and the OE made it die in good time).

The yellow battery is the most expensive one in my walmarts, pushing $70-80 now.

However, it is the best in both quality/value and service.

They warrantied (pro-rated) a 3.5 year old dud I found, no receipt necessary.

Wal-Mart doesn't carry a -any- battery for our Escape. Sears didn't pull one up either and I'm pretty sure Sam's won't have anything either. I guess the only option is the Ford dealer when I go to replace it next year. I'm surprised as alot of Ford's use this same battery. My sisters Focus uses the same and Walmart managed to shoehorn another one in but you can tell it's not right. I need to check on who made but there's alot of corrosion so I'm guessing Exide. I've cleaned that burger every oil change and it keeps coming back.

Your Escape takes a group 40R battery. The Wal-Mart here has them (made by Exide).

In place of a group 40R battery you could use any of the following (check for fit first, some are longer than others, height and width is the same):

Group 41
Group 47
Group 48
Group 91

Of these, the Group 48 and Group 91 will usually have the largest capacity, 700CCA. So if you can fit that one, it's the one to use.

I put a Group 47 battery in my Ford Contour in place of the Group 40R battery because nobody had it. Now it's a little easier to find the Group 40R battery--Autozone and Advance Auto both have it. I think I could have fit a Group 48 battery in my Contour.

All of these batteries are European reverse-terminal batteries.

I ended up getting Interstate Mega Tron Plus for both my cars from local tire shop that gives me such good service and discounted both batteries. Since the Interstate Mega Tron Plus is made by Johnson Controls, I'm sure I'll be satisfied. Thankx to everyone for their post on this topic.

Thanks for the info.. I'll check it out. Since we travel alot I prefer Walmart. I was going to see if the battery from my Ranger (group 59) would work. It's newer so hopefully by the time it gets five years the other one would have died and not wasting a battery. Haven't measured it but I know the terminals are reversed it will be long shot.

[censored] jinxed myself. Went out to measure and the red light was on. Didn't want to chance it so I decided to replace it, did turn back to green once I shook it. Checked Walmart and they had a 40R Premium but made by Exide none of the others on the list. Checked OReilly's and they had a 40R and 48R so went ahead and got the 48, pulling a travel trailer eventually might come in handy. Was a little snug but it'll work. Build date on the escape is 9/03 so it was time. OReilly's is made by East Penn? Wonder how reliable they are?

East Penn/Deka makes good quality batteries. No worries.

You don't need really good batteries unless you live in a rough climate (very hot or very cold). I live in Calif where it's mild and I always buy the cheapest battery I can find ($55), and they always last at least 5-6 years. I don't know exactly how long they last because I always proactively replace them at the 5-6 year anniversary. Who knows, they could go 7 years but I prefer not to take the chance.

The way to tell is to look at the vent caps. The ones on Johnson Controls have squared corners, the ones on Exide batteries have rounded corners.

please help me with this statement about round vs squared corners.

Here is a pic of a interstate battery made by JC. It looks to me that the vent caps are rounded not squared?

Or am I looking at the wrong things. Looking at these pictures I would conclude that the JC batteries have rounded not square vent caps.......

Help, I am confused

When I say "squared" I mean the corner has an angle. The Johnson Controls battery vent cap has a 135 degree angle at each corner (it's really an elongated octagon).

The Exide battery has a rounded edge which you really can't see in that photo too well. It's a rectangle and not an octagon, and each corner of the rectangle is rounded and not a 90 degree angle.

There are some variations to this. Some of the Johnson Controls European reverse-terminal batteries (the ones that have connections for remote venting) have vent caps which are rectangular strips about 1" wide and 4" long. The ones that don't have connections for remote venting use the octagonal vent caps.

Some of the Exide European reverse-terminal batteries have round vent caps you can unscrew with a coin or large screwdriver.

You can't see it on the Exide photo too well, but the vent caps on the Exide have the same warnings/text/graphics on each one.

On the Johnson Controls battery, each vent cap has different warnings/text/graphics.

I guess the Exide way eliminates a potential problem--no chance of shipping a battery missing the required warnings because someone put the wrong vent cap on.

I didn't know Autolite is made by Exide, I have it in '94 LS400.

The reason I bought Autolite at Kragen was I could not find the size 27F at Costco, Sams Club nor Walmart.

I've bought many East Penn manufactured batteries (usually Dekas) and had good luck with all but one (bought from a tool shop, didn't look at manufacture date). Many problems with Delco batteries. Currently have a MOPAR battery in the truck, don't know who makes these batteries.
