Can't get rid of a junk car!

California's apparently special. I don't live there but it seems like...

A registration sticks to the car, just like the plates. It's someone's responsibility to keep it up. You have to declare it "in-op" to the DMV but this also costs money, just less of it, so some people don't think forward and stop paying entirely, because they hate their car/life.

If you sell a car, the buyer drives off in it with the same plates on it! You, the former owner, are on the hook until the buyer presents themselves for a new title. There's a form for that!

There are some other uptight states that require buyers to title cars within 30 days of buying them or fees start. The really anal ones want a safety inspection/ smog to pass this step as well, which is a hassle for that project hot rod.

One does not preclude the other.

That! Leave it somewhere with no plates (ideally, in a NO PARKING area) and let the tow jockey grab it.

Have you looked into abandoned vehicle laws in your area? If there's some sort of abandoned vehicle process, that may cancel out the past due fees, but I don't know how CA works...probably not like AL. The state issued abandoned vehicle bill of sale for my Explorer had $4000+ in storage fees listed (I didn't pay any of it, but they record it for some reason).

Unpaid registration.

This is what happens when tags cost over $50 a year on old cars and why the $&@?; that believe an EV should cost three hundo a year registration are wrong.

My uncle drove without registration for at least 10 years because he said it was too expensive.

As tags get more costly you will see more of these cars getting illegally dumped

How does the BMV know there's owed registration?

For example, OP's new hot rod could have been parked (and not plated/ insured) for years because of the bad engine.

That same way the IRS knows you don't pay taxes - very simple. Then you get penalties and interest added to the unpaid balance each year.

Not any more. Stays on records forever.

It was explained above that in CA you have to continue registration regardless. Something I am not familiar with.

They have to keep the state afloat somehow I guess. Keep that cost of living low for everyone.

Unpaid registration. Every year we pay a ransom to the state to allow us to drive on the States poorly maintained roads and highways.

The cost to register after the due date is huge. It goes up weekly. Say it costs $200 to register your car. Of your 30 days late the fees double to $400. And they keep going up. Its not uncommon to have several thousand dollars due on an unregistered car.

Can't take it with fees due. Same with the cash for klunkers they have here. The klunker must be registered, pass smog and be driven to the klunker lot.

Never do that in this state!! They will track it by VIN.

It requires LE to initiate.................... tow guys can not just take it, Then you get towing and daily storage fees .......big $$. This is on top of past registration, penalty and interest.

If not in you name, I would think part it out on craigslist and maybe offer it afterwards for free on CL or part it out and leave it where the city tow trucks get it. My opinion only.

You say you head about it, did you tell the guy you would take it figuring to make a few bucks? If so you own that one, otherwise chop it up, sell what you can and dump the rest piecemeal.

Ya basically. The scrappers do it. Why can't I? I dont want to take it apart and have a mess in my yard.
