I was at a 'Princess Auto' supply store the other night, and I had seen before that they carried one type of oil, so I took a closer look at what it was. It is Nemco Resources Ltd. of Manitoba's 'SD-X' 5w30 and 10w30. I found the website and specs for the oil. They are here:

http://www.nemco.mb.ca/pdsuper_duty.html

The spec sheet is a little old, being from 2003, so it only carries the 'SL' rating. The oil in the store was both 5w30 and 10w30; the 10w30 oil was SL, GF-3 rated, while the 5w30 was SM, GF-4 rated.

So the spec sheet is right for the 10w30, but not for the 5w30. Even with that being the case, I couldn't help notice the specs for the 5w30 are pretty good - it is a slightly thicker 5w30, being 11.1 cst @ 100C, which many people here like. However, it also has good cold-crankng specs of 5565 cst @-30C. For 5w30 dino oils I don't think this is too bad, even Pennzoil (supposed to be the best) is 5800 @-30, so it as least on par.

the best part is that being a relatively unknown oil, it is cheaper than the main brands - $3.00/litre CAD. Sounds like a pretty good oil overall - what do all you think?

They also have semi- and full synthetic oils, but the up to date spec sheets aren't on line - they just have this:

Anyone out in Western Canada have any experience with these oils?

We've got a Princess Auto store here in NB, and they have a bunch of that SD-X oil. I've never really picked up a bottle to look at it before.

I haven't fully investigated it yet, but according to reports here Walmart Tech2000 synthetic blend and synthetic may be made by Petro Canada. I'm quite impressed by the extreme hydrocracking process and the resulting baseoil produced by PetroCan. Their 0w30 looks as good as or better than the "sacred" German Castrol (GC) 0w30 product. About the only parameter where GC is ahead is pour point. PC is ahead on both cranking viscosities though.

You may want to compare the specs of the oil you are looking at to PetroCan's. The source of the oil may be PetroCan.

I checked out the links you posted, and I have to say that I don't get a good feeling about this company. Look like amateurs. Possibility they are buying good oil, packaging it, and then doing a substandard job of marketing it. The reality is there is a limited number of actual producers of the oil.

While Nemco oil seems to be good on the spec, don't forget that you can still get those extremely hydrocracked PetroCanada motor oil, Esso Extra varieties from Extrafood/Superstore/Loblaw oftentimes for less then 2 bucks CAD/Litre.

Thanks for the heads up though. I'm currently using Formula Shell GF-4 mineral oil on my home fleet (with LC) for roughly 6 bucks/4L jug.

I just picked up Castrol GTX jug 4.4L @ $10 including free Fram filter. That is about $2/L (taking into account the filter), so $3/L is not exactly cheap. It is a decent price, but nothing special.

As Quest said, you can find Esso and Shell oils for the same price.

It looks like they also sell Mobil, so if that's what they're repackaging maybe I should get a case!
