Hello

I am living in the tropics. Lowest temperature is 26 degrees C and highest is about 35 degrees C.

My 1.5 years old Alfa Romeo 156 manual recommends 10w40 for normal driving or 10w60 for spirited driving. Recommended API specs is SJ and most of us uses Mobil 1 supersyn 5w50 rated SL.

Can I use Motul v300 that is rated SH/CF in my car? I am looking at Motul 300v 15w50.

Thanks

If I had a Alfa Romeo, API wouldn't have a thing to do with my oil choice. I would pick the best oil in the recommend SAE viscosity. But that doesn't answer your question.

Not sure how your manual reads in regard to warranty, but I would probably think the owner's manual was written at least two years back, probably 3. SL wasn't quite around then. Motul makes good oils, but they don't have an SJ oil? Isn't there a nice 15w40 around your parts? In fact I would use the best synthetic 15w40, and be quite content. I would avoid lower cost petroleum 10W-40's. Another choice may be a good synthetic 20W-50.

......So maybe the Motul SH oil is OK, but I would not generally say ANY Petroleum SH 10W-40 is OK (in fact quite the contrary)......

Motul 8100 E-Tech 0w40 is SJ rated. You could consider it if it's available in Singapore and the viscosity is listed in your owners manual.

Hi Pablo

Thanks for your reply. Nothing mentioned about warranty if I did not use an SJ rated oil

Just that I want the best for the car and it is just that the double ester Motul 300v with the SL rating is still not available here.

Yes, we have the Ester E-Tech 0w40 rated SJ here. But not too sure if it is as good as the 300v

Any ideas?

Thanks

Hi Lusiho

Thanks for you reply, I checked and yes we have the Ester E-Tech 0w40 that is rated SJ here. But wondering if it is as good as the 300v.

They are selling these 2 oil at the same price so I could just go back and do a swap. But if I am not mistaken the 300v is supposed to be the top of the line in Motul's line up.

It really depends on your needs and how much you want to spend. Yes, the 300V is a better oil. But the 8100 0w40 is a good PAO / ester blend as well. If you're not racing, then maybe 300V would be overkill. It is, however, perfectly suitable for everyday driving.

Hi Lusilo

Does it matter that I put an API SH oil into my car when the manual suggested SJ. (No warranty issues here).

Have you ever tried Motul? What is the drain interval like? 5,000 km or 10,000 km.

Many thanks

CJ - I have 10 litres of 8100 E-Tech 0w40 in my garage, but I haven't tried it in my car yet. As for using a SH oil in a car calling for SJ....some of the other oil experts would be more qualified to answer that than myself. From memory though, I think the Australian Motul website simply says "exceeds all current standards" in reference to 300V oils.

Ask the oil company if they recommend that oil for your application. If they say no, take it as solid advice. If they say yes, take it as a definite maybe

I think you should be able to trust Motul.

Hi XS650

I called Motul here in Singapore and they said that using SH in my car is ok. But I felt that an independant advise from gurus here will carry more water.

Wise approach, go to multple sources whenever in doubt.

You might also try emailing Motul's home office.
