Can group III/Hydrocracked make your engine leak?

Mobil 1 seeped at every gasket seam when i put it in an old bike (that had never seen synthetic). Proof positive its a grp4, LOL.

FWIW - ran M1 for 3-4 yrs, than after a really cold winter noticed the rear main seeping (I was still a bit oil visc. ignorant at the time, likely flogging the throttle with the oil still rather cold - ouch!). Later gave syntec 0w-30 a try, and some miles later just about every seal was weeping, the rear was pretty bad. Switched to a HM oil and things have returned to just the rear main giving a few drips when parked. I can't say whether the oil's at fault as the seals are now 12 yrs oil and don't know the OC history from the previous owner. Seals do age, but what a PITA it is to change them out.

Sorry for the slight OT

Take care.

But as for hydrocracked oils.... i dont know what to expect,
any ideas?

Shouldn't be any different for you than 'conventional.' I was told in training that PAO's do cause some seal shrinkage but they 'generally' will add an ester (very soluable) co-base to 'carry' the additives and esters cause seal swelling. So they sort of offset one another. Plus the esters are a good natural cleaners.

PAO's alone are not very good, so those that get worked up about having group III mixed in or even group V products shouldn't. It's required to have a co-base that will hold the additive package; plus they can produce an oil with good VI by adding some PAO without the over use VII's.

That is about like someone saying Bacon will give you a heart attack!!!!

I heard that bacon causes heart attacks because it contains Group IV...causes the heart valves to leak.

It's been pretty well accepted that the straight PAO synthetic did have seal problems. Anyone around those years wouldn't call it a myth. But it's also accepted that they now seem to have a handle on it by in blending ester. But how much ester to you add? for what seal material and seal age? Sure they got it figured out but it's still somewhat of an educated guess, thus you still hear about the seal and leak issue from time to time.
