I finally tried acetone as fuel treatment hoping I would get some extra mpg from my 91 nissan pathfinder w/ 155k miles and my gas mileage took the biggest dive. would it get better after a few more tanks or this is a sign my truck doesn't like it at all. treatment rate was 2oz/10gal of gas...thanks for any input

I haven't been using it long enough to do long term gas milage studies (I am also lazy)

, but there's a graph that shows you are in the desired level for getting positive gas milage, see chart. It might be the gas you use, do you use top tier higher octane? Maybe it would take less acetone in those situations. I'd do some more research, there seams to be more nay sayers than satisfied Acetone users. I am going to keep using it until I find a reason not to. I saw something on TV about it and read the guys theories and if nothing else Acetone cleans very well.

I tried Acetone, didn't do anything at all that I noticed. Engine wasnt smoother, mileage didnt change at all. Only add I have found that seems to give me slightly better(1-3mpg) mileage is redline and to a lesser extent MMO. Both also smooth out the engine quite nicely. Maybe my engine is a nonresponder as well. But acetone doesnt impress me much as an additive.

I have been using the quickstop gas which is the cheapest one here in town, same gas station location and same driving routine for years. I have been using 87 octane as recomended for this truck..

It MIGHT increase mpg but what about 5 years down the road and rubber seals in fuel lines etc?

I think the only benefit to acetone is slight cleaning. And I am not even sure it will do much of that, not only for the tiny amounts in the fuel but the fact that gas is already 5-15% toluene. Toluene is a mighty powerful solvent in its own right.

I stopped using it after a few tanks of about 4oz/per tank for my 14 gallon daytona. Maybe I should give acetone the benefit of the doubt and say it might have less benefits since I already have run so many fuel cleaners and such that my fuel system is as clean as it is ever gonna get on a 14 year old engine. Maybe if the fuel sys was gunked up I would see more of an improvement. I just didnt like having to be so careful with adding it into the tank for fear it would touch the paint. My car seems to be very funny about fuel adds, some it REALLY likes and some it really hates. Currently, my car is addicted to Redline SI-1 the way I am to redbull :lol Although it does seem to like MMO and FP60 to a lesser extent. I personally loved the smell of MMO and FP60! Esp the fuel power.

Acetone is one of the "safest" solvents, and is also one of the most effective at cleaning. I don't think I'd buy into the fact there is no benefit, but maybe you didn't notice any. Did you test the SMOG numbers before and after using it? I'm not trying to make an argument for acetone persay, but isn't nearly every additive just a solvent or mix of solvents and a little oil? Acetone would be half of what's necessary for your traditional additive, just find a lube to go along with it. I use acetone a lot for cleaning and I have yet to find another solvent that cleans better. I think the bigger question is there any possible harm from using acetone, and I have no information either way on that.

The most popular mix is 3 oz. acetone to 10 gal. gasoline.

Such dilution should render the acetone harmless for
our purposes.

Benefits that I see are cleaner spark plugs and
motor oil.

A wild guess, the spark plug cleaning may benefit
gas mileage.

(Too much traffic congestion for me to bother keeping
mileage numbers so I don't know about that.)

yesterday on the napa auto care weekly radio show a caller had a question about fuel additives and they said acetone was a cheap and extrememly effective way to keep your entire fuel system clean, and burning fuel efficeintly and its more safer then otc fuel system cleaners..your engine will last far longer and no deposits

It is relatively safe but.....

Anyway, I don't think the thrust of this thread was to simply discuss its power as a solvent. The OP was referring to thoughts on its supposed qualities in increasing mpg. Most have come to the conclusion it's just decarbonization going on. But some swear by certain treat rates of acetone with every fill-up.

Here's a most excellent thread from the golden years on fuel system cleaners:

on the contrary i use it in all three of my 1998 fords and my mileage went from 16.5 to 23-24mpg in the city....my lincoln with cobra engine in it went from 12to 22mpg in the city..my expedition small increse from 12 to 16mpg in the city..i keep all my paper work of results

I am not sure how thats possible. I have heard the case for it help fuel atomize better, but even that wont increase the yield from combustion to that extent. Only thing I can figure is that you have VERY dirty fuel systems and it cleaned them like night and day. Idk.

i started using acetone couple of years ago and i keep my vehicles prestine..i do not allow dirty anything on or in my vehicles.. when i stop using acetone and use fp60 and neutra mix per mola brew my mpg goes down to 22mpg...still a great mpg for this vic.. winter fuel season e10 in gas mpg goes to 20mpg-21 no matter what i put in tank...i use only shell and sometimes conoco..i have to admit i was shocked initially the defference acetone made and even mola mix...i looked back at my fuel sheets and the best mpg i got was 24.6...this is on the vic....never got that high on the conti...i understand some people find it hard to believe.. iam a bitog'er my cars are a religion.

i filled up just abit ago 11/21/06 in my 1998 vic with acetone and mola brew also this is E10 season here in colorado...us fuel mileage calculator

current odometer reading......143309
previous odometer reading.....143167
actual miles..................142
gallons put in tank...........6.557
your fuel mileage is..........21.66 mpg.

as you can see during ethenol season the fuel mileage drops..

I really like this site for common sense and technologically based reasoning. He covers all of the bases.
web page
He is like a breath of fresh air. I can't believe this acetone subject keeps coming up. It will never die.
