My bro just had his Cadillac "CTS" first oci since bought. He had told me that the dealership doesn't use Mobil 1 BUT Castrol "Syntec" instead!!!!! What's up with that?

Castrol makes a special '4718M synthetic' for GM dealerships. Its not regular Syntec, as regular Syntec is NOT 4718M certified.

While Mobil does provide oil for dealers that use GM Goodwrench oil, dealers are free to choose who provides their oil. They probably got a better deal on castol. I'm suprised they don't at least carry some mobil 1, as almost all the new caddys are starting to come factory filled with it from what I understand.

Parts manager probably looked at this site and decided he did not want to use any of that iron producing oil.

No, all GM vehicles spec'd for syn oil use Mobil 1. My new CTS came with Mobil 1, but I do not know what the dealer uses because they will never do my oil changes

As long as it meets the GM spec 4718, it can be used. Me personally, I don't like the Castrol but I have no data to back it up. I just prefer the Mobil 1 with data to back it up :)

Hi guys,

I was just surprised that the dealership did that. All that really matters is if something goes wrong they'll have to honor the warranty. Besides the oil cap says to use M1 so using Castrol "Syntec" is odd too me.

Even though Castrol may meet the spec,I'm sure that dealer was able to buy Castrol cheaper than M1. It's all about the money, not performance.

The warranty is issued by the manufacturer, not the dealer. The manufacturer reimburses the dealer for the warranty repairs.

But you are correct that the dealer cannot claim the wrong oil was used if they put it in. It is conceivable (but not likely) that GM could make the dealer pay for the warranty repairs themselves without reimbursement from GM.

Which brings me to ask one question.....
(Sorry to get off topic)

Ford has not taken any welfare money, at least not yet. Who will pay for their warranty work? If the Obama team doesn't pay for Ford's warranty work, isn't that a little unfair to Ford?
And with some of the "lifetime warranty" guarantees that Chrysler put out, it makes me wonder all along if they knew what was coming.

That does not mean the government will honor a warranty that has been invalidated by customer abuse or if the wrong oil is used (if there is an oil related problem).

The government will guarantee all warranty work is performed if GM goes out of business (chapter 7), but GM still has to pay it back after a bankruptcy with reorganization (chapter 11).

This is the best solution, to let GM relieve itself of liabilities and start fresh, but guarantee warranty work to customers who would otherwise be considered like any other creditor that would be screwed in a bankruptcy.

In any case, I don't think the rules will change about what is covered under warranty, and what is denied because of customer abuse. The only difference is who reimburses the dealer if a valid warranty claim is made.

However, I do admit that it is easier to cheat the government on warranty claims than it is to cheat GM, so a lot of dealers and owners may end up milking the government.

Lifetime warranties are not always an actual lifetime warranty. Some are the lifetime of the product which is shorter. Furniture lifetime warranties I am told are the lifetime of the furniture which is considered to be 7 years.
