Car brands I can think of that have disappeared in the US:

Alfa Romeo
Peugeot
Renault
Sterling
Yugo (when?)
DeLorean/DMC
AMC
Eagle
Plymouth
Saturn (GM influence)
Pontiac (GM)
Hummer (GM)
Saab (GM)
Mercury
Oldsmobile (GM twin 3 of 4, Buick is still alive)
Isuzu
Suzuki
Geo (now Chevy lol)
Daewoo (?? HOW short-lived?)
DAIHATSU (now Kia???)
...

By the way.. What is the Ford/Mazda arrangement vs the Chrysler/Mitsubishi one?

*AFAIK, Chevy/Toyota is the closest GM equivalent.. but do the still make the Toyota Matrix, since the Vibe is gone?

Toyota just stopped making the Matrix (in the US at least, Corolla hatch might exist elsewhere). Don't think it had anything to do w/ GM though.

Suzuki is gone and it's a little bit of a bother for me as I own a Suzuki Swift. The nearest dealer, who I have used for parts, had been running ads in the paper that say something like: "Yea, Suzuki is bankrupt and gone, but we'll still be here, at least until our cars have been sold."
Doesn't give the buyer much confidence.

No surprises there. Mitsubishi hasn't been competitive for a long time, and Volvo is struggling to do anything outside the norm.

A lot of the brands I see listed were either sub brands or were absorbed into other brands. Mitsubishi is a standalone company, and Volvo, well it's not Ford, right?

Just saw some new Volvo billboards up.

Mitsubishi isn't going anywhere in the world market, IMO.

Suzuki dealers still have signs up.

Pontiac ordered them down when they folded.

Daihatsu shares DNA with Toyota.

Lest we forget Borgwald!

I suspect Mitsu will stick around; their parent corp will subsidize them to keep them around. Don't forget the heavy duty truck segment, which, I know, is imported separately.

From what I have read in the car rags Mitsubishi isn't going anywhere. Not sure about Volvo. always been a fan of the T series and the R series.

Who owns Volvo now? Some China company right? Too bad.

As for Mits if it wasn't for the lancer there really is no reason to look at Mits. They really need to overhaul their whole line to stay competitive.

For the last several years, mitsu has been contemplating leaving the US each year. The only thing that saved them was the Lancer, but that only bought them about 2 years.
they aren't leaving in terms of completely, their other lines, like medium duty and heavy equipment are staying, like forklifts, Fuso truck, the electronics are staying as well, TV's, DVD's, etc..
They're a ginormous all in one company.
But automobiles & trucks, they've got nothing going on.
Even their EV is a joke.

In Oz, Mitsubishi held on and on and on, threatening whichever Government was in that there would be blood on their hands if they didn't give them a few more hundred $M...Fianlly the Govt said no, and they stopped manufacture here, but still sell a lot.
