Burning more oil after MMO

My girlfriends 03 Jetta 2.0 burns oil. It's because VW install the rings upside down on one of the cylinders. They fixed the problem on the 04 2.0's. Her car has 125,00 miles. She drives 75 miles roundtrip everyday, all highway to work. She has admitted to running the engine oil down until the light has come on a few times. She didn't know about the 2.0 burning oil in the past, and she's a woman.

The last OCI I poured in Mobil 1 HM 10W-40 and a pint of MMO. I did a short 3,500 mile OCI. It burned 2 quarts a oil in that time. I did a OCI last week and used Mobil Super HM 10W-40. I checked the oil yesterday after she only drove about 300 miles this week. It was down 1 quart already. I would assume the MMO cleaned the area around the rings, and now more oil gets pass them. Does that sound about right?

I check the oil level every week. I hope the oil loss slows down some. I will be buying oil every week. I know some of you will say I opened a can a worms by helping her with the oil changes. She was going to the dealer every 6 weeks for a bulk dino oil change for years because she didn't know any better. The dealer probably loved her!

Milk Crate, Cheapest name-brand HM oil you can find, put 6 quarts in the crate and into the trunk. Tell her to check it regularly and top off whenever she needs. Hopefully consumption will slow.

man sorry to hear your trouble. any chance getting it fixed? if not you could try Lucas. i have used it in many oil burners with good luck.

Agreed, add a quart when you fill the gas tank.

Forget the MMO. One idea would be to use Auto-Rx and figure it will clean the ring-packs. Follow the directions. How about some 15W40 diesel rated oil. Buy oil by the case and figure it will go through it fast. As you know the oil light comes on when you have about 5 lbs pressure, which means the pump was sucking air and oil. Run a compression test. Maybe before and after the Auto-Rx. The bearings spray oil on the cylinder walls. If the bearings got a little toasted by lack of oil a few times they can spray more oil on the cylinder walls than the rings are designed scrap off, thus burning oil.

My 02 VW Jetta has the 2.0L engine and it seems to use about 1/2 quart in 4000 miles. I run 10w30 dino in this engine.

You can try to use a thicker oil if your climate permits it. Try a 10w30 or 10W-40 high mileage. If it doesn't slow down it down then try HDEO 15w40. I would probably not run synthetic since your oil consumption is quite high.

Agreed.

Also, I really doubt a 1/2 quart of MMO caused such a marked increase in oil consumption. The more like like culprit is the change in oil chemistry between M1 and Mobil Super.

Or she can provide you 12 pack of Heineken, and backrub. You on day off take valve cover off, change all gaskets, clean PVC passages and get new valve, while cleaning that take out spark plugs and put 1 oz of kreen in each hole. Clean all you can under the cover.Clean plugs or change out. Put cover back, turn engine without plugs, careful don't let anybody stand there, poop will fly out spark plug wells.
It helped my car dramatically. I used to add 0.5-1 quart every 300 miles, and it smoked at start up and on rpms higher than 3K. Haven't add a drop since then, ran slightly more 300 miles,no smoke.
On 4 banger it is easy to do project.

well we know its a mechanical issue and additives will not help. but lucas will help slow some consumption. i have used it in wore out beaters and it will work. i would not however rec it for a car thats in good mechanical shape if you noticed the first thing i said was get it fixed

And with that grammar, you are belong in class for the big learning.

Just joking. Lucas in a junk car is no big deal.

that aint right

I'd can the MMO, A-Rx, and Kreen, odds are if she has a habit of running the car low on oil she might have ruined the engine. Try Schaffers #132, STP or something along those lines to thicken up the oil and possibly slow down the use. JMO

Agree.
How long (each time) was the light on?
Does she know? Can you believe her?
A 15w40 certainly won't hurt, and it may slow consumption (which may prevent the light coming on again!)

Yep if she let it get so low that you hear tapping and repeat this several times you will have likely done permenant damage.

I'm puzzled. She bought the car new I take it? If she was having oil consumption issues all she had to do was have the dealer do an oil consumption test for a few oil changes and likely VW would have corrected the improperly installed rings or provided a rebuilt engine back then free of charge, wow certainly a missed opportunity.

Nope none of these additives will do anything to solve the issue, only a mechanical repair will suffice.

You could try using a 10w-40 but unless you live in the desert I wouldn't go any thicker.

She bought the car new in 03. The last time the oil light has come on was in 06. That's when the dealer told her about the 2.0 burning oil. She has checked the oil more often since then. This was one of the reasons she was going in every 6 weeks for oil changes. So the oil had about 2000-2500 miles on it when it was dumped. Waste of money! I'm saving her a bunch of money now.

The last OCI was Mobil 1 HM 10W-40. I am now using Mobil Super HM 10W-40. Both of these has a viscosity @100c in the high 14's. A HDEO 15w40 won't have much higher viscosity @100c. I might try Castrol HM 10W-40 next. It has the highest viscosity @100c of 16.0.

It has been well reported that VW says 1 quart of burn off in 1000 miles is normal.

Maybe try Kreen as some others have mentioned.

Even though 15w40 may not be thicker, it's likely much cheaper than the Mobil HM oils. Plus, HDEO oils are very good regardless.
