And if we open that door, how far do we go? If a person believes that we have a common ancestor in the ape, are we forced to give them the same rights as homo sapiens?

And would this open the door to bringing back other species of the homo genus?

I'll just say this: Given the extremely simplistic moral landscape of modern humanity, I suspect a new Neanderthal would have to be considered human for most purposes, just as a matter of practical expedience.

Besides, if there's even a discussion about whether a totipotent stem cell is a human being for moral purposes, I would imagine a fully grown being of the genus Homo would have a pretty strong case for the same distinction.

I don't have time to answer your post in detail as I have to watch the kardashians but what do you mean by simplistic?

We already had the TV show "Jersey Shore", I think science has already run far far too amok in terms of stabilizing extinct species of neanderthals.

Edit: clarkflower beat me to the joke...with pictures, lol.

Don't you see the danger, John, inherent in what you're doing here? Genetic power is the most awesome force the planet's ever seen, but you wield it like a kid that's found his dad's gun.

As it should, as that makes immensely more sense than trying to adapt another person's cells into the sick.

Agreed. Man trying to be God....has already proven to be a big failure.

The medications that saved my life and those of my friends beg to differ.

This is complex stuff. You're completely right to suggest that reaching too far opens the door to disaster. At the same time, holding back entirely isn't the answer.

Man "trying to be god" is an ongoing process that has lasted as long as free will has; complete with successes and failures.

OK, so you've never seen the "Unfrozen Cavemen Lawyer" skits from Saturday Night Live in the 80's/ 90's. The neaderthal reboot, sir, is going to be drafted high in the first round by the Lions; eventually becoming their general manager.

What does this say about the mom-to-be?

Dr: "We would like to inseminate you so that you will give birth to something between a human and a monkey...not sure how it will turn out, or how 'it' will be treated when/if it lives...but hey a chance to be part of medical history (wink, wink)."

Woman: "Sure. I never plan on having a normal life afterwards anyway, I will be regarded as a freak, looked upon with disdain everywhere I go, never to be loved by another man for the rest of my days. I don't really care how it may harm me internally or affect my health for the rest of my life either. But lets get tot the nitty gritty....How much does it pay?"

Where has medical science gone. This is Frankenstein hack work at best.

There would be women standing in line to do it. I hear that Octomom's porno check ran out and she is back on welfare. She'd be the first in line to be the mom.

I never heard of any complain from the churches about genetically modified food with bio-toxin. So technically this is not any different from genetically modified monkey, if you believe that homo sapiens is really the only man created by God.

Put a Neanderthal in a business suit with good grooming, and he'd walk down the street unnoticed.

We have to consider the 95% that is 'artists conception', and discount much of it.

Better yet, put one in Congress and he'd probably become President in 4 years!
