Breaking in an Engine

What is the best way to break in a lawnmower engine after it has been completely rebuilt?? I also want to know how long does it take to break in an engine??

im not sure about a rebuilt engine but i know a new tecumseh generator engine takes a good 20 hours before it is fully broke in. i have actual scientific data to back this up.

Yes, I agree with Krypto onthis. It take a lot longer to break in a low compression air cooled engine with splash oiling then a modern car engine. 20-50 hours sounds reasonable.

I have several small air cooled engines that I own. Any of them I bought used. But I have had several that I bought new. I would have to agree with the others with the others that these engine take a good 20 plus hours to be broken in. I have a Tecumseh on a generator that had some where around 35 or so hours on it before it stopped using oil. But I have another tecumseh that was also a 5.5 horse that only used oil for the first 15 hours. Both of those motors ran strong and still are. I just bought a 5.5 horse briggs and stratton ohv intek that has about 10 hours on it and hasn't used any oil at all. But I still am gonna wait another 10 or so hours before I will start using syn. oil. From what I have learned and heared I wouldn't consider one of these engines to be broken in till it getts 20 hours on it.

As to how to break it in I have always run my engines run just below top speed and under a light load. I hate to hear that people go out and run the **** out of a brand new or rebuilt engine. But I also have to tell you that it isn't good ether to just let the engine run at or near idle without a load.

Don't let it idle much. Cut the lawn like normal. Change the oil after about 30 minutes to flush new motor debris out.

On new motors I run them for 4-8 hours then change the oil and filter. After that its a 40-45 hour oil and filter cycle. I do about 10-12 oil/filter changes per year per machine. Break in time is probably different with homeowner vs comm'l grade motors. 50-100 hours on comm'l motors is about right. Small homeowner grade motors will take probably 20-30 hours to break in fully. Best way to break them in is to vary the rpm's during this time. Change the throttle regularly from just below full to 1/2 on a regular basis during the break in period.
