Same here on the color. I really do like World Rally Blue -- it's a classic -- and initially I was pretty much convinced it would be the color to get. But the dark gray goes really well with the dark wheels, for one. The bigger reason I decided to go with it is because, honestly, the car's got a lot of little vents and things and while I like them just fine, the less attention I draw the better as far as I'm concerned. I think this color will blend in better and age well. Plus I've always been a sucker for dark gray.

Plus it's a proven performer with good service history. The Mustang Coyote is too new to tell yet.

You'll like it even better when it rains.

Just beware wicking up the boost much. We have some really hot Subies here that run great but they are always swapping in a motor or some such major repair because they have the waste gate screwed shut! The drivetrain seems nearly indestructible, though.

Good luck!

Thanks. It is a good amount of car for the money, for sure. I posted previously when I first test drove the car and while it's obviously down on power when compared to the likes of the Mustang GT, my impression of the WRX when comparing the two was very favorable. It handles like it's on rails and driving it is a very point-and-shoot affair, even when on the gas. When the power comes on, it pulls pretty hard.

Agreed on the service history, too. One of the reasons I was aiming for the 2011 or 2012 WRX is because the EJ25 is tried-and-true and I didn't want to chance what they'd do with the next gen. Although I don't think I'd have any qualms about the Coyote (at least it's not DI!) I do appreciate a proven power train even if it's not on the cutting edge.

The Mustang's interior is quite a bit nicer, in terms of materials. Again though, one of the driving reasons behind my choice here was dog transport, and the WRX interior all seems to be pretty durable. I'm more than willing to give up some soft touch in favor of something that's easy to clean and I won't stress about as much.

There are other small things that caused me to lean against the 'stang:
- Locking fuel door + gas cap instead of the non-locking capless filler.
- 17" wheels (vs 18+ on anything other than the base V6 Mustang).
- Spare tire (or is the V6 the only Mustang that doesn't come with one?)
- I like the Subie's shifter better, even though it's attached to a 5 speed trans to the Mustang's 6.

I could go on. It was a tough choice, that I'd been thinking about for quite a while.

I appear to have devolved into talking about WRX vs. Mustang again. One of my favorite topics

Wow. That is one cool ride, congrats.

I may need to reconsider Subies when we are car shopping again.

Hatchbacks rule!

Congratulations on your new car!

Subarus have starting making handsome looking cars. Fortunately... they are over the period of atrocious designs.

I think the jury is still out on that one. Although I admit, this WRX hatch looks OK, minus the silver tail lights.

Very nice. Looks more German than some German cars to me for some reason. I'd put a Maltese Cross on it and some Bundeswehr stripe to confuse Audi sissies

Congrats on the nice new ride!

Love that dark gray color, always thought the WRX looks great in the darker shades.

If I could only drive one car, and have to rely on it to do everything. No doubt I would take some sort of hatch over a two door pony car.

Just curious, were you at all interested in waiting and looking at the new Focus ST, or does the lack of 4wd on the ST remove it from consideration?

The clear tails are my least favorite thing about the car's design. The sedan, I think, has red lenses, which look better. Maybe there is or will be an option to replace these. The tails themselves are LEDs, which is nice, but I've always been partial to colored lenses over clear ones.

Technically, we do have a truck that can be used to haul stuff too, but it's insured for low miles and we only have it for towing a trailer. The main reason I wanted the day-to-day utility is for longer trips carrying bikes, etc (not a fan of racks when they can be packed in the car) and b/c I chauffeur our dog around 2-3 days a week. Cleaning the back seat of my Civic was painful enough and the Mustang is even tighter.

The Focus ST looks to be a nice car, but it had a couple strikes against it. Number one, as you say, it's FWD. With the revo-knuckle suspension I might've considered it but really I wanted the rear wheels to be getting at least some power. The second strike is that IIRC the ST will be have direct injection engine, and I'm still afraid of DI.

Not yet, although I believe the Legacy GT has a 6 speed manual. The 5 speed is a little ridiculous in this day and age, but as far as I can tell the overall gear spacing in this trans is about the same as the 6 speed in the Mazdaspeed3, for comparison. I've never really been in the "more is better" crowd (although I admit I like 5 speed MTs better than 4 speed MTs

).

Very nice! I've had the WRX on my mind for the past couple of days actually, ever since I watched one of the Fast & Furious movies the other day with my son!

So is there a giant wing, gaudy graphics, and ridiculous [censored] cannon exhausts in your future too?

I really liked the change from a 4 door "boy racer" sedan to a 5 door hatchback. Looks so much better, and much more functional, with zero performance degradation.

Nice car! I'm considering one too.

Just like you, I cross shop the 'stang, 'vette, evo and so on. Still, I need to have practical fun.

I would have preferred to buy a Subaru instead of my Mitsubishi, but I wanted a paddle shift transmission, and a timing chain instead of a belt.

There are a few reasons for this:
1. I like the AWD setup for the Subaru. It is purpose built. The one in every Mitsubishi rally car resembles a FWD car with parts hastily added on.
2. I like boxer engines.
3. I have more trust in Subaru than Mitsubishi.

Nice car.

Man, anyone who actually drives a new Evo and a new WRX is in for a big surprise.

While the Evo goes and handles well, the Subie is light years ahead in refinement and daily utility. 30 minutes in the saddle and I think almost anyone would agree.

Never!

But I could definitely see myself in a 5 door WRX STi! That would be the ultimate year round daily driver!

I think it's better if we just don't mention F&F

How're you enjoying your Civic? While the WRX is an all around better car for me at this point, I do miss my Civic coupe a bit -- for all I complained about it it was a good car and I'd gotten used to it. I am going to miss the mpg for sure

I don't know much first hand about the Evo, but for all the people who knock the WRX (and STi for that matter) on interior quality, I'm finding it perfectly fine. It's true that the dash and door panel materials, along with the headliner, are somewhat inferior to those in the Civic it replaced (i.e. the Civic had some soft touch materials and a woven headliner while the WRX has all hard plastic and mouse fur headliner). But, everything you touch is better -- nice leather on the wheel and shift knob, better arm rest padding on the door, better seat fabric. This particular WRX has no rattles so far, too, which is better than my particular Civic was (even when new), although the Civic had a sunroof which didn't help.

To boot the ride is just as good or better (while the handling is tighter of course), the clutch, shifter, and steering are light, smooth, and easy to use, and the drivetrain is smoother at idle and while revving. To be fair I think my Civic was unusually rough all around.

My point is yes, this car is plenty refined for what it is. It wouldn't be mistaken for a GTI or a BMW, but it's got a great combination of easy econobox style driveability and power & handling. That's what amazed me so much after my first test drive (compared w/ the Mustang especially), and I remember having the exact same feeling years ago when I drove a relative's WRX (probably a 2003 model or thereabouts) around the block.

I'm with you on these points. While it's not rational, I really do prefer longitudinal engines from an aesthetic standpoint, because I love looking at engine bays and I appreciate symmetry in them. The Subaru/Audi AWD setup takes the same nice left-right symmetry you get with a conventional RWD drivetrain and keeps it for AWD (or even FWD, in the case of some Audis).

Feel free to call me a wacko...

It's been a great car so far! The MPG is simply incredible and it is a very comfortable daily driver. But if it was my only car I'd get bored with it pretty quickly, as it certainly doesn't have enough power to satisfy me when I feel the need for speed. Having it along with the Corvette is the perfect duo, but if I could only have just one car for all year round, it very well might be a WRX. What I really like about turbo cars is their ability to be efficient when you need them to be, but have the power when you need it. My very first brand new car was a 1988 Dodge Shadow ES Turbo and I had a lot of fun with that car. Another nice thing with forced induction is how easy it is to make more power by upping the boost a little bit. I assume you'll be doing this with the WRX? (I know I sure would!)

This evening I saw a WRX, apparently the latest model, with red lenses. This car was silver, perhaps it is color dependant?

Was it a 4 or 5 door? I'm pretty sure all the 5 doors have the clear lenses but the 4 doors have red ones.

Oh, I don't know. At this point I'm not planning on it but I can definitely see it becoming tempting later on. I figure w/ this car there are plenty of options for improvements eventually if I get bored w/ the way it is stock.

Unfortunately I didn't notice that, so your knowledge is probably correct.
