It has officially begun. San Francisco banned it, now restaurants are following suit. And I agree. It's a waste of resources and fossil fuels. Certain times it's a necessity, like road trips or camping. But most people buy a case of bottled water just to drink at home.

If you really think about it, it's funny that large corporations can market a commodity like water that should be available to everyone for free or very cheap.

With a few exceptions, municipal tap water is completely safe and tasty. I used to buy a lot of bottled water, but I have decided to buy a filtering system and just drink tap water. It seems backwards to me that gas is cheaper than soda and soda is cheaper than water.

We buy bottled water when we are out and about (haven't seen a public drinking fountain for 20 years).

Usually, we refill the bottles with Brita filtered water and take those with us.

I wouldn't support a ban on bottled water, unless there is genuinely an alternative for those that don't want alcohol, juice, or fizzy drinks when at an event.

While they are in banning mode, they should ban soft drinks (soda?) also. Not only are they bad for the environment, but they are bad for health.

How are soft drinks bad for your health? Sitting on you ---- doing nothing is bad for your health not drinking soft drinks.

Utterly stupid control from the people who supposedly love freedom. Listen to the hippie freaks squeal about loss of constitutional freedoms (which there has been none, btw).

Water should be "free" - sure care to explain that one?

This kind of garbage is terrible. If you don't want to buy bottled water, don't buy it. If someone wants to sell water, yeah we should label them as criminals. Something went terribly wrong in this country with the "new deal", the 1960's caused mind rot, and now everyone wants to be "taken care of" by the government, to the point of giving up on normal human networks and commerce.

That is a misrepresentation. The SF mayor has decided that the city will not provide bottled water for their employees at municipal offices anymore. Anybody can buy or bring their own bottled water to work.

Tap water here tastes vile. Filtering it may reduce the bad taste to acceptable level, but it still doesn't taste like water should taste: clear and fresh.

Thanks Mori. That sounds more reasonable. And I'm sure it'll help world demand for petrochemicals

Not all soft drinks have HFCS. I didn't say it was beneficial, only that it wasn't bad.

My thoughts exactly, reduce the obesity epidemic at the same time.

I wish it was just the hfcs and caffeine that concerned me..

Also have to think about..
-Sodium/potassium benzoate mixed with citric acid link
-Phosphoric acid link
-Carbonated water (no link for this one)
-Artifical sweeteners (dozens of links out there)

And I wasn't suggesting a ban.

But if they are labelling bottled water as destructive, then they should go all the way.

If more people recycled water bottles... I know most soda cans are recycled, even if you don't do it, it happens downstream in the waste stream.

The way to stop obesity is to get more exercise.

I almost never drink soda. Also, when traveling, Fountain soda can be downright awful since it uses local water. I drink a lot of bottled water because I like regularity in my water. I hate the taste of chlorine in water. Poland Spring tastes like pool water to me. The town I grew up in used to have the most delicious water ever from the tap, then about 15 years ago, they tested it and found fecal matter in it. They've since added so much chlorine that when you take a hot shower, it smells like a public pool.

You can't blame them can you, who would want to drink that shlt. Get one of those counter top filters. Mine is great, totally takes the chlorine out.

I filter all tap water now. I use some filter I got at work that uses disposable elements. Works ok. I still like Dasani. The tap water at my job tastes awful.
