I'm considering changing to Bosch ultra platinum or Denso platinum plugs for my 98 Chev Suburban w/ 5.7 L engine. I have the engine programmed for more power w/ the Hypertech Power Programmer. Any thoughts on which might be the better plug? I'm not totally happy w/ Autolights. I need the power for towing 5500 lbs. That's why I did the Power programmer.

I would go w/ the Denso over the Bosch never had good luck w/ Bosch plugs. May i ask why not NGK or A/C Delco's? I have had good luck running the in my GM truck engines!

I would go with NGK, but I would take Denso over Bosch. In my experience Bosch seems to foul more quickly and wear prematurely.

Go with the Denso.

Bosch has a bad reputation on some other forums.

I replaced the NGK in my trimmer with a Bosch and I could barely keep it running. Switched out the Bosch for an Autolite and it ran fine.

Never cared for how Bosch has the center electrode shrouded in the porcelian like they do. I think that is part of the problem with them misfiring.

If a car is not specifically designed for the Bosch plug, don't use it.
What exactly are you not happy about with the Autolites?
Were they stock? NOt AC Delco?

You may want to go to a slightly colder spark plug than the factory offering. If you are towing heavy loads with more power, it is one rare time I would suggest this.

I thank all of you for the suggestions. I'll take a close look at NGK & compare to Denso. I guess I was getting suckered by the trick look of the Bosch 4 prong Ultra Platinum. The Autolights I thought were alright but I felt I didn't get the long life out of them that I should. I don't mind paying more as long as I'm confident it's the best & gives good performance that I can feel. I like how the truck responded especially the Transmission shifts after the Power Programmer.

The extra prong Bosch are really stupid. When you make a spark you want as much of the mixture exposed to it as possible. You dont want extra metal getting in the way of flame propagation. What kind of Autolites are they? Mileage? They might be running too hot and you might consider stepping down in heat range like mechtech2 suggested.

Thanks alot! Great tips. It's come down to NGK or Denso. I'll see which I can get locally & decide. I'll ask about the heat range if I can find the NGK locally.

You could probably also call NGK or Denso and tell them your engine and its modified and you want to step down in heat range.

were the autolite's platinums or not? if they were not, they will typically be worn after about 30K miles. Platinums will last much longer, as will Iridium plugs. My Saturn came stock with Iridiums and they are supposed to be good for 100K.
