Can someone explain how Boron is used in motor oil compared to moly? Example PYB went form having 100ppm moly and 0ppm boron to 0 moly and 100ppm boron. I know there is more to motor oil then this, but can someone explain this to me, wouldn't it be better to use both??? Just a question, I know that it is not a simple one to answer.

I'm not positive but I think Boron is a cleaning additive/detergent. Pennzoil has upped the Boron in all their oils while touting the cleaning abilities.

There is a new tech out there called nano-boric acid, that is very effective as a friction reducer. Pennzoil doesn't use it in this form, it is a cleaning agent here, but in the boric acid form, it seems to exceed moly in terms of how well it works.

Why stop using the moly? I thought that moly protected the engine and wasn't a cleaning agent. How does this work?

Not if you believe the Pennzoil Q&A...

13. A VOA performed on this board showed a significant amount of boron in the formulation of Pennzoil Ultra™.

The function of the boron in Pennzoil Ultra™ formulations is one of protection for non-ferrous metals and sealing materials.

I have a feeling moly is being cut back because of price too. There was a thread a while back stating that China IIRC is buying a lot of Moly driving prices higher.

Read farther down. They seem to make it clear that any boron in the oil is not in the form of nano-boric acid.

"55. Does Pennzoil Ultra™ use nano-boric acid as an anti-wear/fuel saving add.

No, the boron in the formulation is used to protect non-ferrous metals and oil seals."

Yea, but the point was it isn't acting as a detergent. I would like to know what form they are using though.

It probably all isn't being used as a protector. Alot of other oils use it as a detergent, so some of it is probably used for that too, but who can say for sure except pennzoil.

I think I have read that though moly isn't a cleaner, it does aid the oil in resisting oxidation which in turn can aid the cleaning ability of the oil. I like moly oils such as Schaeffer and Royal Purple and I fully realize there are some great oils that use no moly.
