Blue Lights on Traffic Signals

for peeps who only know blue lights from K-Mart...

the blue lights turn depending on whether oncoming traffic/lane has a stop light. Probably blue because all the other obvious colors have been taken

The article itself is correct, but the picture is NOT!
That blue (or aqua) light is for self driving cars in California and likely other states. I forget how they are supposed to be used though.

I wonder why blue. Blue is the toughest color for humans to focus on.
That's also part of why Blue was selected - less distracting from the other Red / Green / Yellow lights but serves its purpose for law enforcement. In general, unless you are focused on looking for them , you likely won't notice them.

As to the post above, MnDOT has been using Blue lights long before any self driving cars... Not what they are intended for at all here.

What states have blue lights ??? In NY, sometimes there will be a bright flashing blue LED across a red light, so you notice the red light.

I remember traffic lights in inner cities that were just red and green, but the green lens looked blue when it was unlit.

I've seen white bulbs above traffic lights to indicate the intersection is all red and clear for police / EMS. Going blue makes no sense.

There are small indicator lights at various intersections around here too. They help provide feedback to motorcycle riders and cyclists who need confirmation on whether they have triggered the sensor strip on the road.

The blue lights have been installed in various cities in Virginia since 2014, so they are old news for us. Here is a Gulf Coast video that explains how/why they are used.

K-Mart stole the "Blue light" special, from the old Southern blue plate special - which is much older. Most don't know that the blue plate special was - it was essentially the special of the day, at a discount, and was generally served on a blue plate.
