I know blending oils is OK as long as they meet API requirements, but has anyone actually made a blend that they don't like?

i.e. Engine noise became louder, ticking sound created, or higher revs when accelerating.

Just wanted to gather some thoughts and experience.

I have yet to hear of a time when someone blended oil and did not like the way it performed, whether it be verifiable proof through UOA or just from the basic "feel" of the ride.

However, after my latest change, it seems that my engine did not like my previous blends.

Previous 2 oil change blends:
3qt PU 5w-40 (SM) + 2qt PU 5w30 (SN)
K&N HP-1004

The first change with the PU blend ran a little rough. Engine revved louder and caused higher RPMs. The second change with the same PU blend caused engine revs to be "inconsistent" to the point that it would cause extremely hard gear shifts...leading me to the point that I thought my transmission was going to start slipping. There were times when I would be slowing down to a complete stop and after dipping below 40mph, gear would downshift hard and drop me from 4th gear to 2nd gear. I thought I was due for a transmission service so I even took the step to try and make an appointment.

Good thing I didn't since my current change with the Chevron Delo 5w-40 and M1 0w-40 blend seems to have solved all kinds of weird engine rev issues. Gear shifting is back to normal...smooth. No high or "inconsistent" engine revs.

I drive a lot and tend to be really aware and sensitive to all my car needs. Any little squeak or weird vibration and I'll definitely notice.

Could my blended PU mix really cause weird issues with my car? With the first use of the blend, I didn't think too much into it. But with the second use of the same blend and same oil filter and the same issues happen, that has to mean something right? Especially when the currect mix doesn't produce the same issues...

So basically...

RP 5w30 -- car runs normal
1st PU mix -- issues begin
2nd PU mix -- issues continue
current mix -- issues disappear

Could it be because you were mixing a 40 and a 30W initially? I dunno?

I am going to mix a little Toyota and Mitsu oil on the next oil change in the Odyssey. all o20 though. I don't see why it wouldnt work well.

The oil blend you used would not make the engine run rough and would certainly not have affected the operation of the slushbox.
If you want a forty in there, M1 0W-40 is about as good as it gets.
If I wanted a forty grade in a nearly new machine, I'd use the M1 or maybe Ultra 5W-40.
If API SL oils are allowed, I might try GC, which has the HTHS to be used in a forty grade application.
I don't think I'd try to outsmart the blenders, in that M1 0W-40, Ultra 5W-40 and GC are all premium products from their respective makers.

You used two different oil filters for both different oil changes ??? I see the K&N and Fram ....... I know Hyundai has a TSB on using non OE filters causing driveability/startup noise issues.

I've used M1, RP, P1, K&N, and Fram. M1 and RP ran great and gave no issues. Fram is currently running great. The period when my issues occurred was when I had K&N installed...during both oil changes with the PU blend. I'm beginning to think that the K&N filter might be the source of issue...given Hyundai's TSB on oil filters.

I wasn't crazy about the high lead reported with my blend but I'm not convinced that it was the blend that caused it. Other than that really can't tell much difference. Engines might feel a bit freeer at cold start but it hasn't been really cold yet.
