BITOG forum software upgrade tomorrow morning

It's always funny when websites/forums make changes or updates. I just have to laugh at the folks who have their petty meltdowns, threaten to leave, and so on !! Running old, outdated forum software can be a security risk for the site too. I, for one, am happy to see this update - the previous software version was without question the OLDEST forum software I've seen in use anywhere in a long time.

Re-size your browser window. Very few websites are designed for the wide resolution that monitors support. If the websites you visit have a lot of wasted whitespace on one side or both, it's NOT designed for the resolution you run it. Also, making your browser window doesn't make things "bigger" like some seem to think. Yes, the window is bigger but text, pictures, etc do not automatically resize larger.

To the contrary, the design is now relatively up-to-date !

I gripped about the dumbing down of the web a while back with everything going mobile friendly/desktop crippled.

All the fancy web stuff is not supported on mobile, so they don't bother with it.

A well-designed website should re-format "well" based on the browser you're using, the size of your browser window, the device you're using (computer vs tablet vs phone, etc). Many times certain features are simply disabled or removed and it's on purpose. Sometimes there's technical reasons too and the website operator can't simply add it back in.

There was nothing wrong with the old layout it was fine the way it was, now upgrading because there is back end stuff that needed updating for security / operational efficiencies fine but the design/layout was efficient and fine the way it was and served everyone well the decade I have been here Why change it for the sake of changing it?

I would very much prefer if "Active Topics" were not split out by subforum but were instead active topics regardless of sub forum as it used to be.

The new view is similar to the "Forums" view where you can see the latest thread per sub forum already.

Works great on my Fire tablet
Two minutes of getting it the way I like it. No big deal
Me likes it...

We just removed the min-height, so the white space in a post is smaller

This whole site is reactive now, meaning that when you resize your browser, the site will resize correctly. In fact, try narrowing your desktop browser until the left column goes away - that's reactive.

Will have to evaluate on a newer version of Chrome than Version 49.0.2623.112 that runs on my OS X 10.6.8 installation on the Macbook Pro (I dual-boot Sierra, but can't let Snow Leopard go because of the simple, no-nonsense GUI). First impressions of the forum UI on this decrepit Chrome install are not good.

I respect the backend of forums needs to be upgraded to keep the site secure, but I've never understood why this always involves changing to some clunky, half-baked mobile design for desktop users (usually with grey, greyer and greyer text and backgrounds, oversized menu bars and so on). It is a lot like my persisting with an old installation of Mac OS X all this time, yes I can mostly get along with newer OS', but the slightly older and less glitzy UI is far nicer to work with.

My opinion is the same here on the forums. We'll all get used to the software designer's ideal of "improvement," but the old BITOG layout will be what many ultimately prefer. I wish there was a way to keep the old UI as the skin.
This is most-assuredly NOT a dig at our Admin here on BITOG, as much of this is presumably beyond his control. I hope the layout and function will be tweaked in time to better encompass the positive facets of both the old and new layouts.

That's exactly the type of behavior that I was referring to - sometimes things are removed, for instance, based on how the user has things set up on their end.

Don't worry, I'm not afraid of change!

Oh, I'll certainly agree it's up-to-date with other badly designed mobile/desktop hybrid websites.

Changing the min-height helps. Now get a decent color stylesheet ...

That's something alright. Imagine every website is like this ... "Don't like the sidebar, just resize your browser until it disappears " and spend all my time resizing the browser for each site I visit

Update looks good with the dark theme. Custom avatars and a like button would be nice! A big thanks to wwilson for everything he does to keep the site going!
