BIL's 2015 Rogue Just Quit on Side of Road...

...as they were driving back to Memphis from Gulf Shores. Apparently he was driving down the highway and it just quit. My sis, in a separate vehicle, jumped him, but it died again a short distance later.

They are in Mobile right now trying to decide whether to have it towed to Nissan or just try changing the batt.

I am in my vehicle also returning to TN, but I'm not going thru Mobile.

Hopefully it's just the batt. He doesn't think he left the lights on or anything.

Will a 2015 vehicle run without a battery?
 
I had the same thing happen on my 07 mustang about 4 years ago. Stopped at a rest stop coming back from Orange Beach, AL. Car wouldn't start, tried to jump a million times.....finally the miata that was trying to jump me....fianlly got it started. Didn't turn car off till we got home...LOL.

Yeah, something like that I'd expect if it was just the batt. But the car should keep running until you shut it off if it's just a bad batt, right?

Real [censored], as this is a brand-new vehicle with only several hundred miles; they've only had it <1 month.

Probably not.

My 03 Focus died on the side of the road when the battery was done. While on the highway, it lost power to accessories (dash gauges, radio, etc) until the engine finally started to lose power. We found a nearby gas station to leave the car. I tried topping up the fluid levels to get it going, but no go

I guess newer cars' ECU needs constant power in order to keep it running.

If the battery can't produce enough voltage to excite the regulator / computer ... it won't "turn on" the alternator. The vehicle won't turn on the alternator and the battery isn't strong enough to run the electronics so it just shuts down.
 
The Nissan batteries are well known go be total junk... Seriously. Replace the battery would certainly be my first move without hesitation. I got my Nissan and noticed a nice Interstate battery. My first thought was wow.. Nissan has a contract with Interstate to supply their batteries from the factory ?? Cool. Ahh.. No. The original battery died at some point EARLY on and the first owner had that junk replaced with a legitimate very good battery. That lasted a long time too. I've read on the Nissan and Infiniti site just how poor the factory batteries from Nissan are. Many people had to replace them within the first year. Is it possible the alternator is bad ?? I would lean heavily against that.. But a slight possibility.. Have the battery tested first.. Sad that batteries from the manufactors are poor quality.

Our KIA had a garbage battery in it when we bought it too. Replaced at only 16k miles. Only thing I have done to it though and now at 46k.

I can't imagine it being any more serious than just the battery, either. But they decided to just take it to a local dealership there in Mobile.

It's just an inconvenience; now they're going to have to get motel rooms for the night (their 2 small kids, and my mom, are with them).
 
I'd check the alternator output at the battery posts with the car idling to see if you are getting at least 14V.

Also before starting see if you have 12.6V at the battery posts. If you do you have other issues.

When you eat up the "reserve capacity" on any car, they shut off.

So if you see 12.6V at the battery after you think the battery "died" it actually points to the fact that the battery is being charged in the first place.

A brand new car can have many problems that are just related to assembly issues. The dealer will fix up the problem and you'll be fine.
 
I thought an alternator could provide its own excitation current for the field coils once it was running, therefore keeping your vehicle running even if the batt was dead.

So y'all are saying that modern cars don't work like that?
 
Usually a car stops running when the Alternator isn't able to charge the battery, then you use the "reserve capacity" of the battery that your injectors, PCM, etc etc etc need to operate the car. So the car shuts off.

It is just minor checks with a 12$ multimeter.

That being said, if the battery is fully charged (12.6V), you have 14V at the battery posts when the car is running after starting it, you have other problems.

Such as a CAM sensor failing that wasnt manufactured right etc.

This is the prime reason many people love a brand new car.

Dump it at the dealer!
 
Well.... My Interstate lasted over 60,000 miles worth of starts with ZERO issues.. I would bet it had a lot more starts on it than that.. Not bad in my book.. But that's my observation.

JCI batteries are good and I pretty much always get them, if only I could get the East Penn batteries for the same price I would, they seem to be the only ones that never have corrosion issues. AAP codes are tempting when I see a $40-50 code.

Back on topic though... Isn't that just cruddy, you have a brand new vehicle because you don't want to deal with used car problems yet they still have used car problems sometimes.

I know. But I doubt it's a bad alternator in a brand-new car.

Yep, I'd call their corporate number, talk to a supervisor and get reimbursements for the motel rooms.
 
Anything can go wrong with a new car too. My aunts 2013 Beetle had a bad A/C compressor that worked when it wanted to since new, they changed it a couple months ago.

Look in the owners manual, Nissan should provide free towing to a dealership for the first year and there's a phone number in there. Don't pay for towing or a battery. Let them figure it out.
