Guys:

Looking for recommendations for Non Front loader Washer. Not happy with Samsung/LG products due to reliability issues. Seeking near commercial version of agitator type washer.

Thanks for help. Also, same thing for dishwasher (currently have Samsung we don't like-takes too long and doesn't clean all that well).

JR

I personally like Maytag for appliances, I've heard from small appliance stores that maytag is more reliable over the other brands.

I think you can't go wrong with an Amana, which is Whirlpool's "value line" aimed for rentals and apartment dwellers that uses their older tech. Basic, no frills. If you don't care about saving water or energy. Even mainline Whirlpool/Maytag's regular top loaders will be fine.

I didn't know they still made them. I just looked they have one model that is electronically controlled but I am sure it will last forever.

+1 You know when they offer an optional coin box for it the thing it is not your average household unit. My wife wont have anything else, all metal gear drive, SS drum, etc it is made to last.

I have a 2016 model speed queen top loader with the mechanical timer, metal gears, etc. Great machine and the wife and I are very happy with it. But if you are buying new I have bad news. Speed queen revamped their washers for 2018 (in short form they cheaped out, IMHO) If you could find a 2017 or older you'd be set.

One of their dealers started posting videos on youtube to illustrate the differences and Speed Queen pulled his dealership.

Here are a few of his videos.

You can do a search for others opinions of the new speed queen. It is my understanding that the Maytag commercial washer is now the closest thing you can find to a real, traditional, top-loader.

I have one that is 21 years old now, but way back when I bought it was just called heavy duty. Only repair that has been done is new agitator dogs, and I did the repair. Cost round about $7 for a new set of agitator dogs. None of the water efficiency stuff is on mine.

What is saved in water gets eaten up in having to buy another washer over and over. Save water but use up other resources having to replace washer. That is how I ended up doing it.

Agitator are rougher on clothes and use a lot more water. They also do not spin the clothers as dry as a front loader.

HqW wowout a top loader with water jets?

Look in Consumer Reports.

Keep in mind that just because someone has a brand-A and it lasted 20 years does not mean if you buy a new brand-A that it will last 20 years.

Even with issues, I prefer front loader.

I'm going to suggest a brand that most of you never heard of - Staber Washers.

Made in Groveport, Ohio. Commercial grade. Used by many fire departments. Google it. Worth a look, especially now that Speed Queen has began to go down the "road of cheapening" as some have suggested (excluding the price).

Maytag is just hanging its hat on the old Maytag name - without putting in the work to distinguish it from the Whirlpool brand, once Whirlpool bought the Maytag brand. This is not uncommon, many manufacturers do the same thing. Buy out a company, close down the plant, and make them your own. Look at what Toro did to Lawn Boy mowers after buying them out.

Between that and the timers being notoriously inaccurate on HE machines, and the fact that special attention must be paid to them so they do not become a moldy mess HE machines suck! I rented while I was in school and much preferred the 15 year old top loaders to modern front loading HEs. Front loaders are great but what is the point if you have to bend over to load/unload them?

If you want a near commercial version, buy a used commercial version. I find that "heavy duty/commercial grade" homeowner appliances are slightly beefed homeowner models with a vastly inflated price. Good luck getting an old Speed Queen, although that would be ideal.

I've got a top loading Maytag (Yeah I know, Whirlpool) that is a beast. It is HE, but since it is top loading, you don't have to worry about some of the issues with front loaders. It has huge capacity and keeps up with the 12 people living in our house. (9 kids and mother-in-law.)

We wore out an LG that was a real piece of junk. It would easily become imbalanced and then it would fill up the drum entirely, stir it around, then try again. It would do this again and again and again. They could never fix it. It got worse and worse, doing it with even small loads.

When we installed the Maytag, we immediately saw a drop in our water bill. It has only suffered from imbalance once or twice in over a year and a half and instead of using up a bunch of water trying to right itself, it tries a few shaking moves with a small amount of water, then gives up and sounds a beep to let you know the issue and let you adjust the load by hand. Much better.

Anyway, this Maytag runs day and night. We probably put 3 or 4 years of typical use into one year, so I'd say we're at the equivalent of 4 or 5 years of use now with no issues. We have its matching dryer and it does a great job, too.

Got my folks a Sears (Whirlpool?) top loader HE. Seems fine.
We have a Fisher Pakel, which is big in Europe where space is limited. Been great for maybe 15 years or so.

Large appliances is something I have had a good deal of experience with. For a washing machine, I recommend GE top loader with an agitator. These things will get your clothes clean and are very reliable. They are belt driven for a cheap and easy repair. I can't recommend any Whirlpool Corp. washers (Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Roper, Estate), they are "Direct drive" and repair prone. GE: https://products.geappliances.com/a...price&Type=Top+Load&Agitator=Yes
For dishwashers, Whirlpool brands or GE.

We just bought a new whirlpool top loader with no agitator. We have only had it a few day but so far we love it. It is QUIET! When you walk out of the wash room you can't even hear it running. Our last washer an older Maytag shook the whole dang house. Our clothes are a lot cleaner too. Wife and I both noticed right away that it was doing a way better job at cleaning.

We held off from buying a front-loader for many years.

A year and a half ago, got rid of the Kenmore Elite Oasis top loader, and put in a Samsung WF50K FRONT loader.

It gets the clothes obviously cleaner, and drier in spin. We have literally 1/3 the lint in the dryer screen, to.

Wife is smart enough to leave the door and soap tray open. In the summer, the dehumidifier blows into the open door.

Absolutely NO odor or mold growth. Not even in the drain filter.
