Just curious on people’s thoughts on best winter oil for very cold temperatures. For a vehicle being parked outside and not plugged in. Thanks

Which brand and weight?

You aren’t going to do better than the 0w-20 oils you’re using. Assuming that you see lows in the -20F to -30F range, you probably want to add a block heater to your truck’s engine, and perhaps a battery blanket to keep the electrical chemistry happening well on the really cold nights.

It looks like your signature says you use 0W-20. Are you looking for confirmation of your already-made decisions?

If you’re simply making conversation then I’ll gladly join in. I live in NW Illinois and I use 5w30 MaxLife blend in my short-tripped Camry with no issues. I currently have 5W-20 MaxLife blend in my Odyssey, though I have previously run PPHM 0W-20 in it and I plan to run that again next time.

Petro Canada brand is excellent.
I think it's helped by their northern location...they really take the mission seriously.

Anything that meets MIL-PRF-46167D will perform well, that's what the US Army uses for their -60F startup tests. Back when I was involved the supplier was Cognis Emgard which is now BASF.

Mobil 1 0w20 AFE is a very good cold weather oil....in fact...it's a very good oil period....

I'd suggest your choice is already pretty good. Any 0w-XX ILSAC, especially a 0w-20, should fare quite well, and Amsoil's CCS and MRV numbers have generally been better than average within grade.

0W anything is the best cold weather oil. Best oil viscosity that covers all the bases, actually. Regardless of outside temperature, anytime a vehicle has sat for a period of time it's considered a cold start and it never hurts to get the oil pumping to vital parts quickly, even if it's above freezing.

Last winter in WI (and not the very northern or western parts that typically are colder, either) we had two weeks straight in late Dec and early Jan, then one more in Feb, that did not get above 6 degrees F. Many days in a row of highs around zero. Low temps, not including wind chill, were 30 below. Then three feet of snow in April between two storms.

Till last year I used to live in Toronto. used 5w20 mobil1 and changed every 6 months.
This year I am in Winnipeg Manitoba. Thinking to put mobil1 0w20 EP ( my car is now back speced for 0w20) in winter time and run it for 9 months. My car burns oil so when topping , I am planning to use 0w20 while its winters and from spring onwards add mobil1 5w20 . hope that when mixed together these two viscocities wont cause any camical reaction that will adversly effect something.

I’m sure the sig in the op wasn’t there when he posted. Anyway since we have a plethora of “best oil” questions tonight, here is some reading.

This is mainly what I was doing. Maybe see if there was some boutique oil worth trying.

For the coldest of the cold I believe M1 AFE in a 0w20 had the lowest (best) scores scores, but I don't pay much attention to that.
