I would go with what ever Amsoil product that any of the Amsoil reps here recommend.

Or M1

M1 sorta lasts OK, but the wear numbers, the wear will just be unacceptable with M1. With Amsoil the oil will be fairly ugly in some aspect at the end of 12 months and 15,000 miles, but the wear will be excellent. I don't ask you to trust me, just go study a few years worth of UOA's.

If dirt gets into his engine it doesn't matter what oil is in there, the bearings will get trashed. He should be changing filters and oil much more often if the conditions are severe, IMHO.

I would normally recommend Mobil 1, but since Amsoil will warranty their oil and filters for 1 year OCIs it seems like a great fit.

One test I read on Mobil 1 showed the oil was ok for 18,000 miles but if it had not been a test they would have changed it about 8,000 miles. The Amsoil tested was still going strong at 14,000 miles other than being out of grade and I doubt your buddy will care about that very much.

Yikes, some of these responses are downright mean. I knew a guy who sounds just like your friend, despite treating his cars like trash, he was brilliant.

I would not help your friend. He does not care for the truck and Ford needs all the help they can get.

Tell him about Iffy Lube.

Or I would go with the Amsoil that Pablo recommends..

Take care, bill

I think the engine will live a long healthy life on lousy oil change intervals so long as a decent oil is chosen, use amsoil or an HDEO, 0w30 or 5w30 or 10w30 IMO... Probably use an amsoil or Mobil filter or something fancy and call it good, I think the filter will be fine for a year/15k. Spike it with some LC20 or something if it makes ya feel any better.

Most N/A engines could probably make it to 50,000-100,000 miles on the factory fill these days. It would be trashed, but the point is that an engine doesn't just blow up because of some extended drains. The reality, is that MOST people out there are driving around past their due date and 2qts low and our roads aren't littered with broken down cars.

Amsoil. As Palbo stated, M1 is NOT the same. I'm WAS a long time M1 fan but the quality just isn't there at the moment.

errrrrrrrrrrr not sure what in the world you are talking about

Not refering to you, talking about the people who have the "dont help him" or "he's an idiot" additude. Just cause someone doesnt live up to your standards doesnt mean you should let the guys car die, or he's an idiot.

And really, would any of you not help a friend? I also know someone else who never changed their oil in the 10,000 miles they had their car, I didnt like him very much and he's an idiot in every sence of the word, but I helped him change it, it was pitch black, the filter indicated it was a jiffy lube job (dino most likely), and only about 1.5 quarts drained out.

I wouldnt want the car to die a premature death, expecially if he was paying for it and it took 20 minutes of my time.

Do you like to lubricate you engine with iron particles?

Regardless of the oil you chose, I'd change it more often if possible under severe conditions. It's just not worth it sometimes to extend drains.

Amsoil boasts 25k miles/1 year for its TSO (SL grade) and ASL/ASM (SM grade) along with EaO filter. Seems like a good fit.

Guaranteed?

With caveats.. Here is the fine print lifted from their tso website

"Service Life
AMSOIL Synthetic 0w30 Motor Oil is recommended for extended drain intervals in unmodified(1), mechanically sound(2) gasoline-fueled vehicles as follows:

Normal Service(3) - Up to 35,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first.
Severe Service(4) - Up to 17,500 miles or one year, whichever comes first.
Replace AMSOIL Ea™ Full-Flow Oil Filter at the time of oil change up to 25,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first (other brands at standard OEM* intervals).
In all other applications, extend the oil change interval according to oil analysis or follow the OEM* drain interval.
*OEM - Original Equipment Manufacturer

(1) Engines operating under modified conditions are excluded from extended drain recommendations. Examples include the use of performance computer chips; non-OEM-approved exhaust, fuel or air induction systems; and the use of fuels other than those recommended for normal operation by the manufacturers.

(2) Engines are in good working condition and within the factory design settings. Mechanically sound engines, for example, do not leak oil or consume excessive amounts, are not worn out, do not overheat, do not have internal or external anti-freeze leaks and have properly working emission control systems. AMSOIL recommends repairing malfunctioning engines prior to the installation of AMSOIL synthetic oils.

(3) Personal transportation vehicles frequently traveling greater than 10 miles (16km) at a time and not operating under severe service.

(4) Turbo/supercharged vehicles, commercial or fleet vehicles, excessive engine idling, first and subsequent use of AMSOIL engine oil in vehicles with over 100,000 miles, daily short-trip driving (less than 10 miles), frequent towing, plowing, hauling or dusty-condition driving.

AMSOIL Ea Full-Flow Oil Filters are designed for extended drain intervals. They stop smaller particles, flow more oil and last longer than regular filters. For best performance, use AMSOIL Ea Full-Flow Oil Filters."
