I recently bought a 2010 Corolla that has the usual 4 cyl engine.
It has 80,000 miles and the previous owner used Dino PYB 05w30 from day 1.
I use a Full Synthetic 0w20 in my 2014 Civic.
I would like to know if there would be any benefits (or problems such as leaks developing) if I use the synthetic.
It would be a switch from conventional to synthetic and a viscocity change as well.
Any/all recommendations would be appreciated

I'd probably run an interval of High Mileage oil to help condition the seals. Valvoline Maxlife full synthetic 0w20 or Pennzoil Platinmum High Mileage 0w20 available at most Walmarts.

PYB is a nice oil. I don't see any reason to make any switches.

How do the other fluids look? I would consider changing stuff like your brake fluid, PS, ATF etc. before considering a syn switch

Thanks SatinSilver and Bgallagher
The synthetic I use in the Civic is TGMO. High mileage might be better...?
I will change other fluids when I do the oil change.

What oil change interval are you aiming for? 5k, 10k? If it was me, and I was going to do 5k OCI, I'd probably pick Maxlife or whatever was on sale, and just go to 5k intervals on the oil of my choice. Doubtful that there is much "gunk" in the engine, unless if the conventional was pushed for too long. If I was going to do 10k, I might do a change at 3k on a lower-cost synthetic, inspect filter, then jump to 10k intervals. Just in case. Mostly out of FUD.

80k shouldn't need high mileage oil though. I wouldn't feel a need to use it. From what I understand, it won't hurt anything, though.

In the winter I'd switch to 0W-20...doesn't the 2010 Corolla call for 0W-20???

Why did it see 5w30 from day 1?

it does call for 0w20
I'm not sure why original owner used 05w30 dino.
My main oil related concern I guess is...will leaks develop as a result of using a full synthetic ?

Wonder if the owner was on the internet back in 2010 and read of all the doom and gloom about 0W20? or maybe (s)he just didn't buy into the hype that surrounds TGMO 0W20?

I know my Tundra says thicker is ok if being, well, used as the truck it is. I think my 2011 Camry has similar wording. And certainly both engines indicate xW30's elsewhere in the world. I almost think my two are more quiet on xW30 (but readily admit it's probably me trying real hard). I'll probably switch back and forth between the two weights going forward, depending upon my mood. Plenty of antedotal evidence on the web seems to indicate... that it really doesn't matter.

No harm, no foul, I think.

Nope. My understanding is that back in the 70's, switching to synthetic may result in issues. Back in the 70's. On older engines. Whatever issue there was got rectified by the 80's.

I used the 5w-20 before for warranty. Too thin for me though. Seemed more like sewing machine oil than motor oil. Now the 0w-20, I can see if you lived up in the Yukon Territories or AK. I'd call it dinosaur wizz.

OP, your guess as to leaks is as good as anyone's on this board. In-and-of-itself, synthetic will not cause a leak but if it clears out any sludge or deposits from the original owner's poor maintenance, an existing leak may be exposed. Nothing wrong with either conventional or synthetic in the 2ZR-FE though. If you'r going up to 5K miles and normal daily driving, i'd stick with conventional. Anything more? Synthetic or Blend.

I would stay with pyb and change the vis to 5w-20.

At this point, I think that's what I would go to as well. Even the conventional 5w20 will do just fine in all 4 season in NH.

It's been fine on 5w30, so why change now? I would continue with Pennzoil conventional unless you're going to a higher OCI.

Honestly Pennzoil is just as good as other oils, buy with price in mind if the specs are the same.
I used Pennzoil for years and did not really have any issues with it.. I am currently using Mobil super 5000 as my Dino choice and Mobil 1 as my synthetic choice because its great oil and its always in stock.
Im not saying Pennzoil is a bad oil it's not.

NO NEED TO change at 80,000 miles keep using the Dino PYB 05w30 as from day 1.

80000k miles is considered high mileage anyway.

Please do not get sucked in to go thinner at this stage.

More dis-benefits than benefits, despite what our learned colleagues believe.
