currently running an oem toyota filter with redline 5w30 in my 98 4runner. i would like to know what is a good high/ higher flow filter for this application. anyone had any good luck or experience with the trd oil filters? amsoil? kn&n? i think that mann hummel even makes one for my 3.4. that would be a good one i suppose. anyone? thanks guys...

My vote for the best flowing AND filtering oil filter is the EaO series from Amsoil. They recommend a EaO 57, per their filter lookup on the website. You could use the EaO 34 which is a little longer, if you have plenty of room. But with these filters, the capacity and flow is so good that upsizing is not really needed. I have no experience with this filter on your exact engine, however. Seems like it would be a good match with Redline engine oil, which is a high end product as well. How long you running between oil changes? I would not bother with the EaO unless you plan to go at least 10k miles to get some good use out of the expensive EaO filter. Other opinions?

Purolator Premium gets my vote.
KN, M1, X2, Donaldson, Hastings, Fleetguard, STP, ST...... are worth looking into.

Upsize if there is room. The PH3600 and PH8a are worth trial fitting.

Thanks guys for the response. I just hooked up with Gary Allen from Amsoil and am going to order several of the eao 57 filters. I do not think that I have enough room down there to go any longer. The oil filter on these 3rd gen 4runners is in the most rediculous place. I plan to do 10k on the oil and filters. I think this next round I am going to marry the filter to some nice Amsoil series 2000 0w30. We will see how this setup does.

Does the larger Toyota 90915-20004 filter fit? That's the filter that used to be speced for the Toyota/Lexus V-8s. If that fits your v6, I'd imagine that would be an ideal filter. I currently use these on my Lexus V8. They are hard to get as they are only made in Japan, but I think well worth the extra effort.

I have run the 90915-20004 on my 87 4Runner 22RE.... Both your 4Runner V6 and my 87 22RE call for the same filter as far as toyota is concerened..I believe the new filter is the 90915-YZZD1.

I also run the 90915-20004 filter on my 96 Lexus LX450. I am very happy with the 20004 on my lexus. I believe that the 90915-20004 is truly a revolutionary filter and where most modern oil filters are headed to....It's truly ahead of it's time. And toyota uses either the 20004 or it's sister equivalents the 20001/3, and the 10004 on their new enginer assemblies at the factory.

However my startup oil pressure wasn't as good on the 4Runner with the 20004 filter. I'm not sure why, because the ADBV is a good silcone quality. I believe it has more to do with the size of the filter (perhaps too big for that application since the 20004 is truly designed for V8's).

I switched to the TRD (made in Japan red cans) equivalent PTR04-00000-13.

According to toyota this replaces 90915-20001 & 08922-02004, and 90915-2003. It still has the same unusual hardened synthetic media (fiberglass mix?) as the 90915-2004 but with a smaller design and the same exact red ADBV (silcone). Poof and my start-up noise/rattle issues are gone as soon as i started using this filter.

this has tought me that bigger is not always better when it comes to filters. You should for the most part use the size that your specific engine application was designed for and calls for.

I have a 2001 4runner w/ 3.4 v6 and have run the Amsoil Eao oil filter and the oil stayed alot cleaner looking and my magnetic drain plug had a very small amount of "stuff" on it as compard to when I was running the oem filter. I know it is not to a positive way to test a filter but when you look at the specs. on the Eao filters they are hard to beat. Also I think since they can be run longer than other filters the price difference does not come into play as much and for the added protection I think it's worth it.

Use the EAO.
