Well, I had the shop drop the pan, replace the filter and refill with T-IV. Must say I feel much better having that done.

Yes, there is still old fluid mixed in with the old stuff. He said the pan didn't look too bad, but the oem filter had a slimy paste of sludge on it. The owner of the shop suggested not to put 100% new fluid in since the history of service was unknown, and the detergents of the new fluid would begin "washing" the dirt and stuff out. He recommended changing the filter again in about a year or 30,000 miles. I'll change the filter again at 100k when the cooling system gets serviced too.

When do you think I should start doing drain and refills of the fluid? Maybe put about 4000 miles on and do another drain/refill?

For now, do whatever makes you and your wallet feel good. Then just start a regimen that's reasonable and easy to remember. For example, you could do your drain/fill's at each 10,000 mile mark, or at every other oil change, or something to that effect.

Just having a decent routine is most important, if you ask me. Save bigger tasks, like flushes or pan drops, for the major milestones.

Stevens Creek Toyota in the Bay Area quoted me $4.69 for a case, which is quite reasonable compareed to Castrol MV ATF ($3.99/Q).

Maybe I should visit my local dealer instead of calling them, to see if they budge on the price. They want $7+/qt for a case!

A buddy of mine got me a deal on T-IV for less than $4/qt so I'll be starting my drain/fill regimine very soon!

Just do a flush and fill with T-IV. It's best to change all of the fluid. There really isn't any dirt to wash out, and new fluid cannot cause or accelerate any existing failure.

gonna do drain and fills. I already had the pan dropped and cleaned, filter replaced. Figure I'll have the filter changed again at 100k and be good for awhile with drain and fills.

It's more efficient and effective to remove the lines and do a flush. The filter should never need to be changed again (it didn't need to be changed in the first place). The filter is essentially a "rock stopper," if you have significant debris on your filter, your transmission is probably toast.

Critic:

there was no significant debris on the old filter that he showed me except for a minimal amount of sludgy-paste attached to the filter casing. They replaced the filter with a "felt" type. Do you think that it ever needs to be replaced again? My guess is that it should be good for a long while and I should just do a complete fluid exchange. (I have 12 quarts of T-IV waiting in the garage)

It should not need to be replaced again. The small amount of sludgy paste is probably from the break-in period and the magnet usually catches that.

I would use the 12 quarts of T-IV and perform a complete fluid exchange at this point. There are many thread with instructions on this site.
