SO yesterday, my ignition coil failed. It's a MSD Blaster SS single terminal e-core coil being driven by a Mallory Hi-fire VI box. Lasted a few years, but it should not have failed. Nothing angers me more when I hop into the car and it wont start. I have a very, very low tolerance for failures like this. Anyway, should mention that when I bought it, there were doubts, as it was proudly branded "Made in China" on the bottom. So after a quick diagnosis, I'm in the market for a quality, high output coil. And one that's not made in china. It has to be able to fire a V6 engine at 8000rpm.

Does anyone have any luck with Crane cams coils?

There is a Crane PS91 and PS92 model that would work great, but I don't know where they are manufactured. Also, any experiences with Herko, Accel or other brands of coil?

Ford? $50, carry an extra? Be glad it is not a COP where six or eight feels like you are buying another engine.

I sure feel your pain. Unfortunately it is getting very difficult to buy anything made In the good ole USA these days.

Being made in China is not a death sentence.
You may end up getting one from Korea or China.
USA parts are not immune to failure at all.
Good luck.

It's for a Mazda. Yeah, thank goodness I had an spare oil-filled Accel.. wired up and it works, but the RPMs/voltage will probably destroy it soon. I'm so disappointed in the MSD, it was even mounted away from the heat and vibrations, which is usually what eats COPs

Yes, it is a sad day when over half of your options for critical auto parts are from cost-cut, slave labour production plants. Honestly mechtech, I'd rather the Korea part. I have been burned too many times by stuff contracted out to China, although I'm sure the Chinese are capable of turning out a quality product, it's just the incentive thing.

I see some motorcycle e-coils on ebay from good brands like Denso. Is there any reason one couldn't use it in an aftermarket setup?

EDIT: looks like the motorcycle coils are just for one cyl, not multi

I've had THREE MSD blaster coils fail. I stopped buying them. I ended up swapping in a stock 1992 Mustang coil to replace the last dead MSD.

With respect to the Crane coils, I've had good luck with them.

It was the 5527 IIRC, the OE-style fit for a Ford 302. It used to be called the Blaster TFI, but now they have a cheaper coil with that designation. Go figure.....

The Crane coil was the one that came with their HI-6 ignition, I'll find a pic.

A neighbor of mine who is into Camaros had 2 MSD coils fail on his LT1 1995 Z28. He went back to the OEM coil, which I told him had more then enough spark power for his needs.

Looks like a Ford TFI coil with a fancy heat sink to me. If the Mallory Hi-fire VI box will fire a TFI coil I would just do that.

Well, a HI-6 and an MSD 6AL both work with the stock Ford TFI coil, FWIW.

Yep looks like I inadvertently built the system around the TFI style coil.

OVERKILL, how do those stock Ford TFI coils hold up in your experience.. Think it's a good idea to grab one from a yard for a backup?

That sound's promising, I'm feeling good about Crane's parts.

also just read this on a hotrod forum
"A lot of times a stock OEM coil is a pretty good coil, often better quality than brands painted bright colors, with names like "Supercharged Turbo Lightening Blaster Mark2 Flamethrower High Performance" ignition coil.

Go get an OEM coil out of a junkyard. "

The OEM Mustang coils are pretty good, I have one in my Town Car hooked up to a 6AL and it has never given me an issue. That was after two blaster coils that both died and I gave up on MSD.

OEM's are easy to beat on output but very hard to beat on durability.

In many hot setups I have put together I have not been impressed by MSD at all. But I am a HUGE Crane fan, they make great boxes and coils to match.

Mallory coils also did well for me in hot street cars.

Many years ago, I put an Accel performance coil in a Buick my Grandma once had. It worked well, but the car was sold 3 years after I installed it, so I don't know how long it would have lasted.

It definitively made the engine perform better, though. Starting the engine took half as much time.
