Hello everyone. I typically order some oil filters from RockAuto whenever I am buying parts and often I end up grabbing these Beck Arnley 041-0812 filters for my Honda vehicles. The past several years they have always been these black cans that are made in Korea with no manufacturer logos or names. Today I received a mix and several of them are these Japanese VIC C-809 filters.

My googling hardly found any details on them other than they are typically found in Japan, Russia, and Philippians.

Any other users ever come across this particular filter or this brand? I'm not a professional but if needed, I am willing to send one of these Japanese VIC C-809 to someone who is more knowledgeable at assessing filters.

B/A (Black Filter) - I didn't take many photos since this version has been reviewed throughly over the years:

Yes I love his videos and if he sends them it would be a great comparison when he takes them apart

They both look well made. One from Korea and one from Japan.

Thank you! I sent him a message if he would like to revisit this filter that he reviewed last year and if he would like to do a side-by-side comparison of both the black filter and the VIC filter.

Hopefully he sees my e-mail and takes it on.

Just for fun, I weighed both filters on a cheap kitchen scale.

Black B/A Filter = 216 grams
VIC C-809 Filter = 220 grams

That Vic filter appears well made from what can be seen. Uses the better cream colored glue rather than black stuff. Silicone ADBV, holes rather than louvers in the center tube, very similar to a PG filter. I'm really interested in seeing the media, it looks pink/reddish. I hope Whip will cut one open 👍

I have a Beck/Arnley 041-0812 (attached photo) that was ordered for a car we ended up trading in back in 2018 so I believe this is a late 2017/very early 2018 purchase (the box has the date 06-03017 while the filter is stamped H16.11.09), but amusingly it almost looks like a half-way point between the two filters. The inside appears to be the same textured metal spiral core as the black filter you posted. Made in Korea.

I have a few other B/A part numbers with the same form factor (almost same application; same threads, same diameter, roughly the same height) and one is a VIC C-415 made in Japan. Some of their box choices are weird. VIC filters seem to be well-made but I'm going to take a closer look at them later.

Here is a different model from the same company and this looks like a much larger filter so it has a good amount of media but the guy points out the media binding from the end cap slightly bending from that type of spring I guess..

That's an interesting leaf spring, I've never seen one like that before. Definitely didn't do the bottom endcap or the media any favors. The media was quite thin on that one as well. Not sure I'd spin one on personally.

He pushes on the spring fingers on the leaf spring at time 6:15, and it's not that stiff. The issue is more like thin weak sheet metal used for the end caps, and/or the stack up of the guts is too compressive (bottoming out the leaf spring fingers) and causing undue force on the end cap contacting the leaf spring.

Hello again everyone.

Pete from Whipcitywrencher messaged me back and is interested in taking a look at this new filter. We're working out the details atm. I hope to send one of each filter his way shortly.

I do recall buying Beck Arnley filters back then and remember the blue cans. Then one day, they were all arriving as black cans but they seem identical to the old blue cans in everyway possible with the exception of the color. I chalked it up as a color change and nothing more. I wish I had put more thought into getting them cut open.

Bringing up box dates, the ones I have are 06-20424. Not sure what this means but my dyslexic side wants to say June 2024.

The Black B/A filters shares the same date code H22.05.20 on top :

The VIC filter has some Kanji characters and 15AF on top:

For fun, here is a picture of the VIC filter installed on today's oil change with a '23 Honda Odyessy:

Just to note, I ordered these filters on 11-17-2024. My curiosity gotten the best of me today and I decided to order 10 more filters. I'll provide an update when they arrive. Perhaps in another 6-8 months, I'll order another batch.

I don't think that's a date code on the box sticker. The date code will be on the oil filter instead like your filter photos show.

I'm going to be cutting open the blue can one of these days, along with whatever shows up on my doorstep now that I've ordered a fresh example.

My understanding of the box code is that it is to note when Beck/Arnley packaged the product they sourced into their box. Same format as the codes on the control arm and water outlet boxes I have from B/A.

Just to provide an update. Pete from Whipcitywrencher received my filters. There isn't an ETA when they will be reviewed but he has it in his queue.

I received my 10 additional filters from RockAuto today and they were all the Made in Korea black filters. I did noticed that this shipment came from Los Angeles, CA.

The earlier mix shipment with the Japanese Vic filters were shipped from Syracuse, NY.

The Japan one has swiss cheese media. I am wondering what they know others don’t. Never saw one as Swiss Cheese as this one. Mann, Baldwin, Denso all seem to have some light spots. Fine makers.

The Asian filter manufacturer who used to start its filter numbers with a "C" was Union Sangyo, I believe. I used them for several years until they became hard to find. They usually were available for purchase at smaller independent imported parts stores, and the filters came in a red box.

I think with maybe a few exceptions, engine oil filters really do not have to be so efficient as most will succumb to other end of life failures that will not be related to filtration. Asian makes have always valued flow over efficiency.

Marketing has made many consumers chase the numbers but not the results.
