Because I Can

Red91 I think it's cool that you are running the 30 grade QSGB. My only concern would be if you live in northern Alabama say near Huntsville then it could get a bit too cold up there for that. Now, granted what I am about to type was an extraordinary cold artic push of air into the southeast US but it can and does happen. January 1985 it got gown to -12°F in northern Alabama. It was near 0°F all the way down to just about the Gulf coast. Unless the vehicle was kept in a semi heated garage I would wonder how that would do in such cold temps as that. I'm not saying it wouldn't be ok or not start. But it could be rather interesting I would think. Again, granted that was a very unusual occurrence. In the winter of 2014-15 it got rather cold in the deep South at times. With snow in northern to mid Alabama and sleet and freezing rain almost down to Mobile. Even then low temps got down into the low teens and single digits at night in northern Alabama. Pretty doggone cold for that area of the country. I hope it does go good for you no matter what though.

Yeah Shannow is Aussie, but I haven't seen Pennzoil in Oz since the 90's.

He must know a man who knows a man.

This sounds like a new book title for Lee Child's Jack Reacher series

Back on subject. The KV40 is not that bad for a monograde 30. Plugging in some data into the not so scientific viscosity calculator, you'd be running similar cSt on a 20C start on a summer morning with this compared to a 5W30 (resource conserving 5W30) on a 5C morning.

So fine for summer. I've seen oil temps start well over 30C on my oil temp gauge on a summer afternoon. SAE30 would run without any issues in temps like that.

You could run SAE30 any day of the year in South Oz without issue.

Your gen set will love it during those blackouts.

When it gets that cold in Alabama, it is typically accompanied by ice and/or snow. When ice and snow hits Alabama, even in minute quantities, the state is practically shut down. If it gets into the negatives, the wagon is not going anywhere and my butt is staying inside.

I do understand what you are saying here, but I also remember as a wee lad my dad running straight SAE 30 all year long and some very cold temps. No issues at all. I like the idea and can say i have given thought to it myself.

I do like to add in situations like this that sometimes a vehicle with a carb would start in cold enough conditions where it probably wasn't really a good idea. The old F-150 could do all kinds of unaided starts, and many carbed vehicles just needed a good "catch" and they'd go, irrespective of whether the oil pump was actually doing anything beyond spinning its heels.

Especially when it comes to historical examples, just because you got it started doesn't mean it was a good idea.
