Battle of the Budget Oils: Havoline Dino or TropArctic

If your going based upon cost and they are close to the same, and have been running dino's all along then just do it. Pick the MC or T/A in your favorite weight and give it a whirl, you don't have anything to lose it's only a oil change. Who knows you might even be happy with it

. Besides if cost is a factor, then Shucks has Shell for 49 cents and Valvoline for 79 this week

Is Havoline really considered to be a "budget oil" as you put it?
I thought it was a big name brand. I was under the ipression that oils such as super tech, trop artic, were the budget brands. Am I wrong about Havoline?

It seems "most" of the oils associated with big gas/oil makers are considered "budget" oils. Examples being Superflo, TropArtic, Havoline, Shell, etc...

Although don't confuse the word "budget" with "inferior".

I wish it was easier to find Havoline in the 4 or 5 quart jugs.

Havoline is better -- even if it was the same price as Pennzoil, Castrol & Valvoline.

do you have a ParstSource near you? I see they sell the Havoline at 2.67 a litre there.

Don't think there are any in BC. At least I haven't seen one.

Currently, the only two oils I use in my vehicles are: Havoline dino and TropArtic synthetic blend - so obviously I think both are excellent oils.

Price doesn't really make my oil selection decision, but thanks to what I've learned here on BITOG I just don't see the point in spending more money for something that won't provide any real advantages (high-priced synthetics) in my applications (naturally aspirated engines in a Texas climate).

Mostly, I lean toward TropArtic.

Correction - Budget is CS and Shell for under $1, Warren , Coastal and any other SM I can't recognize even after looking at the back and bottom of the bottle.

You have top tier non advertized oils when you get to tropartic and havoline at $1.50 range.

Thats an excellent description. So we really have 3 rankings of oils:

1. Top Tier Marketed Name Brands (castrol, Pennzoil, Valvoline)

2. Top Tier Non-Marketed Oil Company Oils (TropArtic, Havoline, Shell, Chevron-Delo, Superflo).

3. Generic/Budget Fully Formulated Store-brand oils (super-tech, OReillys, carquest, napa, etc... some of which may actually be relabeled oils from category #1 or #2)

I've used a ton of Napa labeled Valvoline as well as Motorcraft labeled Trop-Artic and back in the day a lot of WesternAuto labeled Havoline, and never had a problem.

The category-3 oils are fine ... just wear out faster due to weaker add-packs.

They have it at Wal-Marts around here in 5 quart jugs...lots of it. Not a single quart of this TropArtic stuff I keep hearing about though.

If you install a 50/50 mixture of Havoline and TropArtic and never change it, it will last the life of the engine.
