Ive searched a few post on here and most guys agree the batteries made by Johnson Controls are top notch. Also most guys agree that batteries made by Exide are not so good. How do you know who made the battery you are looking at? In an older post one poster said the batteries at his local China Mart carries the ones made by Exide and another poster said his local China Mart still carries the good ones by Johnson Control. Just curious so maybe I could tell the difference and not wind up buying a house brand made by Exide.

Exide is [censored]. I have a yellow Ever Start Maxx from China-Mart and it is not made by Exide. It says Johnson Controls on the top.

Sears Die-Easy Gold and Silver batteries are/were made by Exide.

Optima makes good batteries, but they are more than 2x the price of other good batteries.

Interstate makes good batteries.

the sears stuff is made by Johnson Controls.

sams club has energizer which is made by johnson control. It says it somewhere on the battery if I remember right.

Most batteries will say "Made by Exide" Or "Made by Johnson" on the top in small letters.

If your looking at new batteries and some have corrosion already starting on the top post's then your looking at Exides.

A little off topic but it's also just as important to make sure the battery is fresh and hasn't been sitting on the shelf for ages.

In general:

The vent cap covers for Johnson Controls batteries have angled corners (it's got 8 sides, but 4 of them are about 1/4" long). The two vent cap covers have different wording on each.

The vent cap covers for Exide batteries have rounded corners. The two vent cap covers have identical wording on each.

For European reverse-terminal batteries (group 47/48/49/41/40R/91 etc):

The vent cap covers for Johnson Controls batteries are flat and about 3/4" wide and cover three cells. (Except the 40R battery has the same type of vent cap covers found on non-European type Johnson Controls batteries). The place where you connect the vent hose to the battery is in the middle of the long side of the battery.

The vent cap covers on Exide batteries are the round type you unscrew with a coin and there is one for each cell (6). The place where you connect the vent hose to the battery is in the end of the battery (on the narrow side).

The Exide 40R battery appears to be sealed, no vent cap covers at all.

Just want to say "thanks" to everyone who chimed in. With my new found knowledge I checked every battery on the place here just to see what I had, then I headed into town and stopped at China Mart. Turns out all the batteries in stock were made by Johnson Control. I bought a group 34 Everstart Maxx for 65 dollars and change. Thanks all.
