All of them had decent and inexpensive cars. There was no money in inexpensive cars beyond getting CAFE credits.

Dodge will continue to sell trucks( the new Ram is awesome ), the Journey, the new Challenger, plus the Charger and Avenger in addition to the Minivan. All are excellent vehicles. Chrysler has the new Sebring( very nice - too small for me but still very nice )and the 300( due for an update but still a nice ride )and the Town & Country.

I wish people would stop with this the big 3 don't make anything the consumer wants. It is bull. Toyota and Honda are not selling anything either. It is an industry wide issue not a Big 3 issue.

I don't think the Avenger and Sebring can compete with the Malibu, Fusion, Camry, Accord, Sonata, Altima, etc. They are both unappealing and they feel cheap.

I wonder what would happen to the Routan if Chrysler ceases to exist in the future.

What the Big 3 does best is build passe~ vehicles. Anyone will buy a 10 year old Camry. Few care for a 10 year old Big 3 offering (there are exceptions) just due to the styling "statements" that retooling every few years brings.

I don't know if I'm saying this in a way that will be easily understood. You're assured to be driving yesterday's news in a fairly short period of time. If they build a masterpiece, they'll trash that too just due to (probably) retooling contracts with their suppliers

Take a Caliper ...take a Mini. Which one is going to look like a "who cares" car in 6 years? Take an AMC Honet hatchback ..and a 240Z. They both are essentially the same vehicle. One just had the desire to be a classic that they couldn't keep on the showroom floor ...and the other was as boring as domestic engineering could make it.

Exactly. The big 3 make some [censored] good cars.

The Big 3 obviously makes what the majority of consumers buy. Some of them consumers actually keep. What the Big 3 can rarely offer you is something with any resale value due to the number of units that they put on the road to keep the bill collectors at bay.

My son's 96 NEON is a great car. It's worth more in scrap. If it was a CIVIC, it would be worth more as a rolling chassis than the NEON is parted out since there were so many NEONS on the road and that the typical NEON buyer never cared about them after the newness wore off.

You'll see a ton of domestics that are driven to the junkyard. They are never worth the relatively minor repair.

The plants that are being closed unfortunately affect many of those vehicles.

http://money.cnn.com/2009/05/01/news/companies/chrysler_plants/index.htm

Quote:
The plants on the chopping block are the Sterling Heights, Mich., assembly plant that makes the Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger; the St. Louis North assembly plant that builds the Dodge Ram pickup; the Twinsburg, Ohio stamping plant and an engine plant in Kenosha, Wisc.

The St. Louis plant could close as soon as this September, while the Twinsburg plant is slated to close by March. The Kenosha plant would be shut in October 2010 while Sterling Heights would close in December 2010.

I have a hunch that the FIAT partnership just might save Chrysler from the dustbin of automotive history.

Chrysler NEEDS a great car line up. The heritage of the brand always was stylish with innovation and driving quality, FIAT has all the potential products to fill this bill ASAP. Forget about all the nay sayers like Neil Cavuto on FOX. If you consider the mid size FIATS and Alfa Romeo products they can put Chrysler back in the car game ASAP. To keep costs down they WILL build them in the USA and some smaller cars in Mexico.

The FIAT car stable is great from the Fantastic little 500 to the Punto and Grande Punto, Alfa 147, Mito, 159 and more.

Bring em on!!!!!!!!

I's definitely go for a 500 Arbath or Punto Arbath.

Maybe we'll get a Ferrari-Chrysler joint venture vehicle!? A Ferrari-engined Viper? We all know how awesome the Maserati-Chrysler was!! Maybe a jeep like the Lambo Cheetah?

The Viper moniker, as well as the plant where it is assembled are in line for being sold off in bankruptcy court.

Keep in mind that any Fiat products making it to the US are going to be several years away. Chrysler has to survive until then with what they currently have on the table.

European cars are not designed with American crash standards in mind. It would be too expensive to federalize Fiat's current lineup so we are talking, at least, the next generation of their lineup. This could even stretch to two generations depending on what stage in the engineering process the next gen. is in.

Maybe we'll end up with a Ford Viper

My guess is there is a 50-50 chance that some of the Chrysler plants will reopen at the end of the shutdown.

I don't think there is anyone connected with the company who knows how to run an auto company. It's harder than it looks.

According to FIAT and Chrysler, FIAT and Alfa products are on the way and several will be in the showrooms within 18 months.

I have been following FIAT and Chrysler and the inside thought was that Chrysler was going to be teaming up with FIAT for at least a couple of years now to fill their gap for good small and midsize cars. I believe that DOT and EPA work have already been completed for the 500, Mito, and the Grande Punto. Expect them first.

Anybody that buys a Chrysler today should have their head examined...They have the worst realiabilty ever and it gets worse every single year instead of getting better.

To top it off they insist on making the 2.7 SlUDGE ENGINE to this day..I just had a late model Sebring smoking in front of me tonight in Miami Beach...It really bothers me everytime the govenment gives Chrysler more money to burn...What a waste.

I will admit at one time Chrysler made some decent realiable cars like the Duster,Dart,Fury and Satellite...But that was back in the early 70's and those days all long gone.

Ford on the other hand has not taken a penny from the government...So I will keep my loyalty with FORD like all of you should do.

Rubbish, I'd buy a new Challenger tomorrow no head examination needed.

And we should keep our loyalty with Ford? No thank you. You buy what you want and I'll buy what ever the heck I feel like buying.

I have been told this non-sense by people like you for 30 years.

My 89 Shadow with 252K miles say Hi :)

check consumer reports or J.D power rankings, chrysler is consistently near the bottom in qaulity rankings of foreign and domestic auto makers, this is not opinion it is fact.

They weren't perfect, but the 1980's K-Cars weren't bad vehicles. The platform engineering they did with them (600, LeBaron, New Yorker) was pretty good, as a lot of those vehicles did look fairly different from what they were hatched from.

I liked Chrysler products up until the late 90s. I think they began going down hill when Iaccoca retired and Lutz left. The final nail in the coffin was when Diamler took over. They had a couple decent products after that, but for the most part went downhill quickly.
