There are many posts regarding Wix filters and based on the threads they are held in high regard. How do Baldwin filters compare and where do they fall in the list of filters (Wix, SuperTech, PP, AC, M1, K&N, etc.)?

Thanks.

The used car lot I bought a few cars from used to have their vehicles inspected and serviced at the fleetpride store before selling them.

When I bought one from them, it would always have a baldwin filter on it.

Good filter imho.

Thanks for the replies. I have been getting Wix/NapaG/Carquest filters for >$7. I am looking for alternatives. Since SuperTech have a new unpopular design and one of the AC filters (PF2057) is hard to get and AAP would charge ~$7 if they can get it. The Purkulator version of the same filter has too small and too few oil inlets for my liking and I am looking at other brands. I can get Baldwin's online for <$4 each.

Baldwin makes two classes of filters for my vehicles. The cheaper ones caused engine clatter in two of my vehicles -- but the more expensive one I used in my Colroado 4X4 was built very well and quiet. I don't remember the model names to differentiate the two classes, but one was priced like basic Fram -- the other was around $8.

I have been using the Baldwin B329 on my Ford Explorer. I thought it was a very good filter. I recently emailed Baldwin and asked them for some of the specifications on this filter and a possible alternate application. This filter only has a average efficiency rating of about 76%. What does everybody else think of this filter? If I am not mistaken the Motorcraft FL820S is rated at 80%. I have included an excerpt of the reply to my email from Baldwin:

Hello,

The correct filter for the explorer is the B329. We can not guarantee
the B281 on this application. Both filters have a micron rating of 23
and the average efficiency is 75.98% on both. the difference between
them is that the B329 has a 8 PSI by-pass valve and the B281 has a 20
PSI by-pass valve. Again the correct filter to be using is the B329 and
we can guarantee the B281.

Thanks for the inquiry,
Gina

I cut open a baldwin coolant filter a year ago. If that filter was any idication of the rest of their line up then I would say they are quality throughout the entire assembly.

I can't help but think that the B329 specs are more a Ford spec. The Dodge and Chevy Baldwins that I've used have much higher efficiency than that.
