id check the owners manual and read its spec, if you dont have one, id look it up online, but then again i would just use the newest spec, ie sn replaces sm etc

How will this help? The owners manual will have the original spec oil. You need to hear from the manufacturer.

This, guessing at the manufacturer of said horseless carriage is throwing a dart in the dark.

I had been thinking of going to 0w30 in my 2006 Chevrolet 4.3 and my wife's 2001 Subaru 2.5, both of which originally called for 5w30. Chevrolet spec'd 0w30 for cold weather in 2006 and still does, but they continue to recommend 5w30 for their new trucks. Subaru now calls for 0w-20 in the 2.5l for the 2013.

I was curious if I could go to 0w-20 in both vehicles instead of the 0w-30.

The Subaru engines that specify 0W-20 are the new FB series engines. They are very different from the EJ series engine in your 2001. The charts I have seen hanging at my local Subaru dealer still show 5w30 for the EJ engines.

I wouldn't expect a back spec from Subaru. Heck, until a few years ago, they wouldn't even recommend synthetic oil.
