I love Wiscasset. Too bad the old schooners finally disapeared south of the bridge.

Yes, this is very typical of the hundreds of fishing villages along the Maine coast.

As the story goes, Frank Winter bought a small railroad line. He then bought the 2 wooden schooners Hesper and Luther Little at auction for $600 each. He was going to transport lumber and coal between Boston and the railroad station there. He died unexpectedly. The Railroad and the boats were abandoned. The boats floated around, eventually sank and rotted away between 1932-1998. My dad went out on them as a kid. One year fireworks caught them on fire. They eventually had to be removed after one of the storms, were a hazard to other boats. Red's Eats!

Removed. Like they had never been there.

OTOH it does meet DOT specs for repair.

Spent a week in Bar Harbor a few years back. Very much a culture shock for this Texas boy. Lobster & Blueberry Ale everyday. Anything less than 100 degrees in summer is a shock!!

Why, because there was some?

LOL. I was thinking the same thing.

I'm not knocking everybody in TX but there is a brashness that is annoying for those not used to texas attitudes, you notice this especially in Houston and Dallas, not as much elsewhere but still there. Mainers are more laid back and seem to have a quiet confidence, of course I was born there so it figures it would appeal to me more than the bravado in texas.

The Boston accent is becoming extinct. Neither of my teen-agers have it, don't hear any kids with it. Maine still has its variation fairly intact. 1/3 Canadian "eh', 2/3 Boston "aaahh".

Oh it's still out there. Maybe not as common as before.

"Gotta keep a coolah ah beeahs in da cah jus tah make it home baaahhh" - actual quote from former Bostonian co-worker.

Never has a problem in Maine. Each and every person was a pleasure to meet and talk with. During my time there I developed an eye infection and drove back toward Bangor from the island, to see if I could get medical attention. In the town of Ellsworth I saw a eye doctor office. Stopped in during the lunch hour. Explained to the desk clerk my predicament. Within 5-10 minutes the doctor had interrupted his lunch, had me in the chair, examined my eye, gave me a prescription for anti-biotic drops, and refused payment for his services. I was dumbfounded. After returning to Texas the same doctor called me to check on me.

Those pics reinforce why I love it so much living so close to the coast I can smell it at low tide.

Teaching my kids, my 2 year old makes "here" a two-syllable word. Will try to post video.

Around the fishing villages is where the Maine accent is very stong. When I first went to Maine in 64(USN)I couldn't understand those folks at all. After marring a Mainer I get now.
