I have seen several DYI bypass kits use the Baldwin 164 or 50 filter. Per Baldwin these are 15 micron filters. The full flow Napa Gold I use on my 7.3 Power Stroke has a rating of 17 microns.

With that said is the 164 a decent filter for a bypass? Will it really make any difference?

For many users the primary benefit of bypass filtration is to extend the life of the oil. Reducing engine wear is a secondary benefit. If you're not going to remove enough dirt to justify significant increases in your OCI, you may have a tough time justifying installation.

The rating can be off due to the testing method. Some Wix filters are only rated @ 25 but that's under the same test that they do on full flows. The bypass filter is rated for 1-3 gpm. The full flow 9-11.

If you lower the velocity enough, the efficiency of any filter will go up.

The B50 types were used on engines before Full flow oil filters. Will they make a difference?. The industrial engines I worked on with full flow filters last over 2 times longer than the engines with bypass only filters. And both engines are really high quality. If you want a bypass filter get a sub micronic type.
