Average Service Life of ECU ?

I usually add solder if I have problems, due to multiple layers--add heat and apply force to the component so as to pull through. Installation can be similar, if the hole won't clean properly of solder.

Only $25 at the parts yard and about double that from another yard hound. Swapping in the "known good" ECU is part of my troubleshooting kit.


That's was happened in mid 2000's Corollas with poor soldering quality. Fortunately, toyota recalled them.
 
On the subject of leaking/bulging caps, I've cured a non-functioning monitor by replacing few caps. None of them had any signs of failure that could be seen with the naked eye, but all had lost about a half of their rated capacitance. Needless to mention where they were made...I replaced them with 105C Japanese made ones and Bob's your uncle as they say

Older cars, say pre 2000. Pretty solid... Last 20+ years..

Post 2000ish.. May get lucky and it last 10.. Quality in the electronic builds of the ECU's dropped around late 90's or so..

I wonder if this was due to the switch to lead free solder?

Low quality capacitors have affected pretty much every industry, unfortunately.


MADE IN CHINA (or in that area) is the issue with a lot of out sourced parts and equipment these days unfortunately.



The amusing thing (to me anyway) is that high quality Japanese Caps are not really that much more expensive. And the even higher quality Japanese solid Caps are still don't cost that much more.
