PP Corporate recommends 3000 mile oil changes and they push this point hard in Lubes and Grease's because extended oil changes would cost them billions in lost income. The CEO was very clear that the 3000 mile oil change is all about MONEY and that they industry needs to push 3000 mile oil changes.
I suspect that this is why their PP does not hold it's TBN well in many applications. Sure their are a few but most of the UOA I have seen show that the TBN is shot by 5000-7500 miles which is nothing when one looks at GM and it's OLM system! They purposely built the oil weak to discourage extended drains.
Stop and think about this if you have been useing synthetic oil how much sludge do you think is in the engine? How many people with sludged up engies would pay the extra for PP? What they shouldhave done is put the extra cleaning power in their dino oil where it would be needed the most and built their synthetic to be competitive with M1 and Amsoil!
Ha, notice that Barbara Terry is called, "America's Favorite Automotive Expert," not the best. Why is she the favorite? She's cute. Why isn't she the best? Her knowledge seems to be based on VERY outdated Internet information, like I'm also reading a rave review of the "new" C5 Corvette (1997).
John, I don't know what you have been smoking, but you should cut back.
Here is a UOA that was just posted. Notice the run of PP to the run of Mobil 1. You tell me which one looks best. To me they both look good so I would say Shell has done just fine in making a competitor for Mobil 1.

Any chance you could provide some links to these UOA's? I really haven't seen them, though I've heard you mention them several times. I've looked for them, but I'm wondering if they're posted on a different forum.

Also if you look at even Mobil 1 EP they say up to 15k miles excluding severe service OR follow your OLM or manufactures OCI warranty requirement
The 3000 mile recommendation had always been for severe service and where there isn't an OLM, and to maximize engine life and performance. Someone mentioned this change intervals goes back to the '30's or '50's and oils and engines have gotten better. True they both have gotten better, but now engines are expected to last a lot longer and are more expensive to replace or repair. Back then people regularly replaced their car every 2 or 3 years.
Also I like how they say a gallon of used oil improperly disposed of can contaminate a million gallons of drining water. Well changing your oil more frequently doesn't mean you dump a gallon of oil in clean drinking water or any water source at all, anymore than if you change it less frequently. A lot of oil gets recycled/refined. I think there about 200 million gals or so of recycling/refining capacity now.
Well whenever I change my oil and filter the oil light goes out so fast I never see it. The filter probably bypasses anyway till pressure is built up in it, and old filters drainback some anyway. There's going to be a residual film of oil and antiwear additives in your engine anyhow.

Uh it's also in just about every owner's/service manual for severe service up until mostly the advent of oil life moniters. Sure the quick oil change wants to drill in 3k mile oil changes no matter what, but that is an oversimplification of the topic.
And how many people have read their owners manual or even ever inquired about it there? They go by what they're told thru advertising. Just my humble opinion. YMMV
