Automatic License Plate Recognition

One more tool to catch the knuckle draggers.

I really like the idea of the database of plates with no insurance. A great way to start putting the low lifes that don't carry insurance off the road.

Funny,
it's deemed that 10% of cars in my state are unregistered/uninsured.

AND we have licence plate recognition.

BUT it's only used on toll ways and speed cameras.

Be careful what you wish for ..or more correctly stated, be careful of what you're willing to allow to achieve your desired outcome.

Sure, I want only insured cars on the road. I want uninsured drivers to be punished. I don't want struggling families being forced to decide between driving illegally or buying food ..or not going to work.

So, if you see where the remedy might lead us, you have to careful how you attack a problem. The cure may be worse then the illness.

Don't any of you notice that the fabric is getting a little frayed at the seams ...over a very broad spectrum of matters??? Why is that?? Answer that question ..earnestly ..and you may see a solution ..or perhaps, more likely, the futility in attempting to "turn it back".

Someone "somewhere" said the car was involved in an armed robbery. Who? Well, its in the database.

Do I have any confidence in the gov't maintaining an accurate database, and the police using discretion working with the understanding that the data might be inaccurate?

If handing out Katrina aid and tracking it properly is an indication of their I.T prowess, it is a lost cause....

Good points!

I see this all-too-often in life, where somebody comes up with a "solution" to a problem, and puts absolutely no forethought to any potential problems this "solution" may create in the future.

It seems to me that if they're doing a DUI checkpoint they could check for proof of insurance (and a driver's license) too.

As far as plates on vehicles with no insurance, presumably the DMV has an address where the vehicle might be parked so the cops can confiscate the tags off of it..

Virginia and North Carolina solve this problem by their DMVs (Divisions of Motor Vehicles) suspending driver's licenses and tags once insurance lapses. North Carolina has been doing this for years, but Virginia recently caught up.

If there is an issue with people driving on suspended or uninsured tags, it would seem to be a simple matter to have a DMV detail take a list generated weekly and go to addresses on the list to confiscate tags. Fines for reinstating tags and licenses could more than pay for this. North Carolina already has a separate DMV enforcement branch with police powers.

The Big Brother cameras are there for other agendas, and I don't like them, let alone their use for this. It would be too simple to use them and the license plate recognition technology to monitor everyone's movements, which will soon come here and is already used in Britain to a degree.

Virginia has been doing that for years too--I know someone who let the insurance lapse on their car and the VA DMV required him to pay the then-$450 uninsured motorist fee before they'd let him renew the registration.

Of course that doesn't help when people "dual plate" vehicles..that is..you take the front and rear plate and use them on two vehicles with no front plate. Common scam around here among the underclass.

After years have passed, there are still people who can't fly on commercial airline flights because their names were erroneously entered into the Dept. of Homeland Security's "suspected terrorist" database. I suspect ALPR will offer similar fringe benefits.

Its called risk vs benefits. Many people expect the government to come up with perfect solutions. Most people run their lives with a risk/benefit ratio of about .1

And..oh in 6 years..no planes blown out of the sky = benefit. Risk..couple of folks..a dozen maybe? are inconvienced.

Until you are one of those people "inconvienced".

I don't see anybody justifying this system with a cost/benefit or problems created vs. benefits analysis. Just another one of those "if it saves one life, it's worth it" justifications, no matter what it costs or the problems it may create.

There's no evidence that all of this airline security, etc., has made us any safer. There are more 5 times more people killed each year by drunk driving than in the 911 attack. How come no one is concerned about that problem? It would be a much easier way to save lives if that was the point. The chances of getting killed in a terrorist attack are miniscule, but the media and the gov have everybody shaking in their boots. Just another ripoff, IMO.

Hmmmm 4 airlines hijacked in one day-thousands killed. Next 5 years none hijacked noone killed. Whatever.
