2005 Mustang GT. The shifter for the auto trans will not move pass drive. It operates normally otherwise but will not physically move pass drive. It feels like it hits something soft because it has a little "give" when it comes to a stop. Any ideas?

Something fell into the console? I would open it up and have a look at the linkage in there. Could also get under the car and look at that end.

All ready looked underneath, nothing to see. The shifter is pretty much a sealed unit. Nothing appears out of the ordinary when I pulled console cover.

You'll have to go under the car then. Detach the linkage and see if you can move the shift lever at the trans. You may just have a bad cable.

I am not familiar with this car but if you have a push a button on the shifter to pull it beyond drive it may have a problem with the lock out mechanism. It may be an easy fix or you may need a new unit if its sealed, I have no idea.

Release button works fine

News story here in Houston last week (I think I have it right, couldn't find it)-Dad started his Mercedes and backed it out, 2 kids in the car. He went to close the garage, and the younger get gets out, the 4 or 5 year old puts in in gear and the younger boy was run over.Do you not need to put the brake on anymore?
