Why is the rinse phase of the Auto-RX cleaning supposed to clean more gunk out of the engine than the clean phase? If the ARX is in there cleaning, why isn't the gunk coming out during the clean phase?

I think a lot of stuff does come out during the cleaning phase......but some does cling and lightly bind with the metal surfaces as it cleans...this stuff doesn't just drain off so easily. That's when the rinsing with clean oil does the job, just diluting and rinsing the metal surfaces...and why I think Frank (AutoRx) says not to use synthetic for the rinse.

Exactly as Pablo stated. The "clean" phase liquifies all of the crud, but when you drain at the end of the phase, the crud "lies" on top of the metal parts. You need the "rinse" to pick-up the crud and move it to your nice new filter.

....Or another way of looking at it is that ARX softens up a lot of the "baked on" deposits. During the rinse phase, the new oil with its fresh detergents removes these softened deposits.

Yep, that's been discussed and it makes sense that a high detergent dino oil (such as those for diesels or big trucks) would have the greatest cleaning effect.

People also talk about putting on the largest filter that will fit to catch as much crud as possible.

Pablo's post is correct after 1500 miles of Auto-Rx cleaning, liquified contaminants, are laying on metal parts of engine. If you could open your engine you could wipe these contamianants right off of internal engine parts. Since for most thats is not feasable we say use a non synthetic oil to rinse these contaminants off over 2000 miles. We don't want to use a synthetic -semi synthetic oil for rinse.Complex additive package in synthetic-semi synthetic oil will want to stay on the metal. You
want oil to rinse off internal parts of engine.

I think Delvac 1300 Super, Delo 400 & Penzoil Long Life are considered some of the better ones. I'm a Delvac Man, myself.
