I was suspecting that my Subaru Forester has a good bit of sludge due to its fuel rich nature, but after 1500 miles into the cleaning phase cutting open the filter revealed nothing out of the ordinary. (I know I am supposed to share pics.) This may not be a dirty engine after a steady diet of synthetics and 4K OCI for about 75% of its 78K mile life, but we will see what happens in the rinse phase.

We have a Mom's van also, a Toyota Sienna that we bought used with 60K miles on the odo. We had a dealer check up and 60K service right away with a clean bill of health. Then I did a short OCI at 62K when nothing interesting happened to filter or fluid. However, at that time I added 4oz of Auto-RX to the engine oil, just out of curiosity. At the 65K change I cut the filter open and found it full with a thick mud like substance, but at that time I did not have enough ARX left to start a clean phase. At the next OC it will get a full clean/rinse cycle started.

By the way, the filter can opener from Summit Racing is awsome despite of its sub $40 price. You just have to be patient with it and slowly adjust the blade depth about five times for a very clean cut.

I have the Summit. That's about the way all of them work. They're just adapted/morphed tubing/pipe cutters.

How dirty is the oil after 1500? In my car the oil is absolutely pitch black with just over 1,000 miles on the Auto RX clean phase. I took the filter off and cut it open, and it looked about as clean as every other filter I've taken off of my car.

It depends on what kind of formations you have. If you've just got a film(s) coating that's going to fit into the oil in terms of suspension, you'll never see it in the filter. If you've got some mass to the formations ...then you may get a filter with something showing ..sometimes a lot. The "grit" thing that we see from time to time is probably broken off coke formations that didn't get to dissolve yet.

The oil looked perhaps a tad darker than usual at 1500 miles, but I do not have a scientific way for comparison.

I wish taking the valve covers off weren't such a PITA on this boxer engine. Just don't have time for it.

Well, for me, the visuals are just "feel good" evidence of the stuff working. Not that I discount the action, but the big pay off (imo) are the ring packs and other stuff that really can't be seen. Real sludge issues are limited to poor design, neglect, or certain types of service ..and film formations can surely put a shellac on there over time that may or may not show itself in ticks or clicks ..but coke deposits are hard to avoid over time in most engines ..perhaps all
