Just wondering who makes good car ramps that I can
drive a '93 vette onto to do oil changes and work under
the car. I wish to avoid a craniotomy or other misfortune
so I want solid ones. I have heard of plastic ramps that
collapse.

I know you guys use them..so which ones are good.
Thanks,
Craig

I have those black colored Rhinos.

It handled my multi-ton Odyssey no problem at all. The only issue will be if you have the clearance to get your tires up on it.

I just got done driving my Truck onto the $20 rhino ramps that you can get from Wal-mart.

It weighs over 5k pounds with $60 worth of gas in it.. (just filled up today..

The trucks front end weighs more than your Vette I'd bet!

They are VERY safe. I've had a Civic, Corolla, Taurus, Vue, Silverado, PT Cruiser, F250, F150, Jetta, Caravan, Exploder to mane a few outfits with never a problem.

Just go slow and have someone to watch out to cover yourself.

I have used the 12,000 pound rated Rhino ramps that are grey in color. They hold up the front end of my 4,500 pound pick-em-up truck thingy.

No problems so far bit I am mistrustful of pert near everything.

So....... after the truck ascends the ramps I place a couple metal jack stands under the frame towards the front.

Such a minimal amount of effort and time that would pay immense dividends should a ramp(s) collapse, the ground under the ramps settles (no paved driveway here at the shanty) or if anything weird strange or bizarre happens.

Redundency.... a wondrous concept that could possibly prevent a vehicle from crashing down upon thine body. If the worst happens, one would hope for a quick painless demise. But, what if the clearance between ground and vehicle "only" resulted in slow asphyxiation due to the inability to expand the rib cage? If you can't breath in and out you could not yell for help and ye would semi-slowly lapse into unconciousness with death ready to grasp thee with its cold eternal fingers.

Or, thine ribs would be broken or perhaps thine heart bruised from the impact. So much pain!!! Agonizing pain!!!!! And, to think, the simple act of adding to the ramps... such as a couple jack stands, would prevent those unwanted events.

The choice is yours!!!!!

You're a geek obbop.

I have the grey Rhino Ramps, and they have always worked great for me. I pull whoever's car it is up onto the ramps, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels... just in case. Throwing a block of something or jackstands between you and the car should the ramps fail is probably a good idea, but mine have always felt solid as a rock, so I haven't felt the need.

Rhino Ramps here.
Great product.

The collapse tales are just that...tales.
If they collapse it's because the user probably used the 8000 lb gross lighter ramps for heavier vehicles.
If these ramps collapsed as often as the myth, the company would be out of business with all the lawsuits.

I'm not sure of the brand, but I have generic-looking steel ones with separately-purchased extensions from the same manufacturer. These were all I could find around here that work with low-clearance vehicles. I used grit tape on them for traction.

Craig,

Get the Rhino ramps... they obviously don't rust or bend like the steel ramps.

I have had the black ones since early 90's, bought specifically for my Miata but also took my lowered Mustang with no front end scraping.

You can get them at WalMart (sometimes) or local AdvancePepZone for ~$30, everytime I saw them online they were 2X that!

Any of them should hold a Corvette but check weight ratings to be sure.

Just came home from MI today(Oxford, Bay City, Jackson, Troy and Plymouth)... didn't notice the beefed up Highway Patrol someone brought up in another thread.

I did pick up a case of Havoline 5w30 at Murray's for $1.99/qt. Ouch!

If it really makes you nervous, why not spend an extra $20 on jack stands for insurance? Between the ramps under the tires and the jack stands on the jack points, you could nap under there for hours...

Yikes, they moved the thread.

Murray's has the Rhino's on sale.

I bought the Gray ones at Menards for under 30 dollars.

I use the Rhino 8000 ramps for my GTI. I love them, & they cost me less than $20 at WM last year.

Do you guys think the Rhino 8000's would be safe to use for my wife's Expedition? It doesn't weigh 8000 lbs., does it?

Have the black Rhino Ramps here and they work great for an '04 Civic. No bottoming out or scraping of the bumper so they should work fine for you. However, you may want to check the width to see if they can accomodate the wide tires typically used on Vettes.

Remember that your only picking up the front end. The total weight for your outfit is well under 6000 lbs so you'd be fine.

If you have low range, it makes going up ramps sooo much easier.

The load rating of ramps is usually for the GVWR of the vehicle.

Sounds like Rhino is the way to go. My steel ramps have a brace so I don't think they'll ever fail, but I have seen some without the brace that look a little scary to me. What kind of ramp failed under the Bimmer, andyd?

IDK the brand. It was yellow and rated for 3k lbs. It was X braced lengthwise , but had no side wise bracing and it bent side wise.

My yellow ramps were sold by Sears. They collapsed under the weight of my BMW 325i. Sears basically told me to go pound salt, that they would not warranty them. I contacted a National Consumer group and filed a complaint. These ramps were rated at 2700lb per ramp. I now have the Rhino 8000's.

one thing about ramps: never use just one, same as with stands, every incident I've ever seen was using just one.

I was using the pair, the right side went.
