I recently purchased a '97 Dodge Cummins Diesel with NV4500 5-speed. The tailshaft seal was leaking as was the pinion seal. I added Auto R-X to both per instructions. I now find out the trans specs are for synthetic gear oil for the transmission (which is what must be in there now). I don't mind using regular gear oil for the rinse phase, but don't want to leave it in permanately. Now that I have the Auto
R-X/synthetic cocktail in the trans, will this work or do I have to start over?

Here's the instructions for manual transmission application:

Manual Transmission

The application ratio is 1 ounce of Auto-RX® per quart of oil. Drive 1,000 miles and drain the Auto-RX® and oil. Refill according to your vehicle manufacturer's recommendation. The application will last for the life of your manual transmission.

Thanks Dan, I was lead to understand the synthetic oil currently in the trans would cause a problem with the effectiveness of the
Auto R-X. WIll it work just as well?

I don't think the manual trans program calls for either a rinse phase nor use of conventional fluid (which is always a rinse phase statement as well).

My assumption is that the effect of ARX in transmissions is not challenged by the same combustion by products that affect engine oil, hence the simpler process.

I am running 3 oz of ARX in my 2.8 quart 5 speed now and am going to drain and replace fluid with Molakule's SF MTL-R at 1000 miles.

Frank has said the problem with synthetics and A-RX is that the polar qualities of the synthetic oils slow the cleaning process. Presumably they bond to the metal and whatever crap is attached to the metal, and it is harder for the A-RX to chemically work through the attached oil barrier and clean the metal. Note he said it slows the process, not that it stops it.

I would email Frank and ask what he thinks. I'm sure he'll answer, and I'd actually be curious to hear what he says.

The recommendation I give to my customers is that unless the old oil is black and very thick or there are large metal flakes (1/32" or larger, not paste), then there is no need to rinse.

ARX certainly won't hurt anything and may condition the seal.
