Auto parts stores open thanksgiving?

My company has had a zero absence policy for 10 years. There is no sick time. You get sick, you report a vacation day, or risk reprimand.
Time off is scheduled for the next year in December. There is some ability to swap, but you need to have your time missed covered by another with a similar training matrix as your own. It's a companies way of saying they love you, and want you there, as convoluted as that sounds. You made it through downsizing because you were valuable, so now we need you show up.

Many times Xmas and Thanksgiving can very sad day when you realize lack of family and/or friends etc for various reasons. My wife's work get the volunteer that day coupled to 1.5 rate where they earning at least $60/hr on a holiday.

I get paid 20 hours to work 8 hours on Thursday + $300 for being On Call for the week.

Luckily I work alone, don't punch a time clock and can flex my work schedule.... 6AM - 3PM so I don't miss Thanksgiving dinner.

Re point system

I worked, yes worked in past tense, with a fellow who routinely kept his point total at -6 when -7 was termination. He got food poisoning. Guess what. Fired.

My total is normally +7. I ate at the same place. Mine fell to +5 I am still there. My shoulder surgery got me down to +3, then gall bladder hit, went to 0. I am still there and happy

When I worked at AAP, we were open for Thanksgiving. We were a Hub store and other AAP stores were closed, their phones were forwarded to our store. We had customers waiting as we opened the store at 9 am !!

It's a shame that getting paid to work is putting a crimp in your playtime.
Let me guess,you're a millennial.

Yeah, I work about 65-70 hour work weeks right now. Most days I'm simply home to shower and sleep. Look at the numbers of worker productivity from the 1960's and today. Millennials are a lot more productive than workers in the ‘50's and ‘60's.

A milenial would have a smart phone and look at such stats before insulting a whole generation.

If you want to make your own schedule and still support yourself, start your own business. You'll work faaaaaaaaaaaar harder than any employer could legally make you work, but just maybe you'll succeed, and THEN you can do what you want, when you want.

Good luck.

As much as I hate to say this,I totally agree with 02SE. I've been working since I was 12. I've always had to work hard all my life. That's what life as an adult is all about, you do what you gotta do to make sure food is on the table, your rent is paid, bills are paid, etc. You work hard to make sure you survive no matter what kind've work you do. ALL jobs are honorable, even minimum wage jobs because you're working and being productive. I'll never put down someone's job, because that what makes you a real man, getting out and working,no matter what it is.

Just get up and go to work that day,and once you're off,go spend time with your family. Everything will be fine. Don't let yourself get upset.

And just like he said, working for yourself may have you working 24 hours a day. My gf is an immigration attorney and has her own firm, and she literally works the entire night through sometimes. It's very tough.

The store's sales numbers went through the roof when I started working there. Which is why I'm always scheduled 6 days a week. The one day I'm not there? Sales are noticeably lower.

Does your mind cherry pick what sentences to process to reach a pre determined conclusion. I think so.

"Calling in sick" means you have shifted the burden to another person who will have to work your hours. It's likely that person will double up and miss out on Thanksgiving.

Having been in the military and working in healthcare, I missed a lot. I and my family adapted.

Missing holidays and events is a part of work life. Get used to it. Buck up.

A good employer won't dock you any points for legitimate medical absences.

Im scheduled for 3 hours on Thanksgiving. I'm planning on just not going. Call in sick. I've given them my weekends every single weekend since I started 2 months ago.

1) If you're scheduled to work, would you not go? Call in sick? Would your place of work be busy?

2) How busy would auto parts stores that are open be on that day?

3) Share a good ditch work story.

If you get fired don't complain. Work is a responsibility and at times is it terrible but your employment is not an entitlement.

Yeah ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Very true.... I have worked a LOT of holidays at the hospital and at my high end retirement community...

And it is part of the dance. And I am ok with it. Being that I have no children makes it to where I actually volunteer to work on those days. I'd rather my lady co workers have off to be with their children and grandchildren...

Having said that.... Retail places being open Thanksgiving is down right stupid.... And I mean really STUPID..For goodness sake can't everyone just stop and slow down for one blanking beaver dam day?? I mean really... Give me a brake. It is totally ridiculous. Some mental midgets several years ago started this horse number2... And those idiots should have there rear ends beat. I think it is just plain crazy... And unnecessary.

If you honestly think there is no whining about working holidays in these environments, you've lost your touch.

Everyone wants to be home. Well, most everyone.

I get that not everyone can; I am missing Thanksgiving myself, but I can't think of a single reason for AutoZone to be open.

Bradley: I'm glad you volunteer to work. Bless you my southern friend

I'm sure there were slackards back then too.
I don't think you can compare work from 60 yrs ago.If you can't handle working 3hrs on Thanksgiving, you sure couldn't deal with the work conditions from the old days.
You came to the wrong place for any advise on lying to get out of work.

It sounds to me like they are being pretty considerate. Scheduling it so no one works more that 3 hours sounds accommodating. Being there less than 2 months, they could just make the new guy work the whole shift.

If you call out, won't the guy you relieve be stuck working 6 hours?

As the new guy on the job, you should appreciate and be thankful that they scheduled you for 3 hours. Some people will work the whole day.
