"auto abuse" should be a crime.

the previous owner of my Jeep abused it. compression ranges from 110-130. nice, huh? it only has 96k on it, so it still shoulda been new; especially since its the venerable 318.

I really hate working on cars when they are snow/ice covered as I dont like getting dripped on. had to tho, I have no idea when the oil was changed last in the Jeep. (I thought I was gonna sell it last year so I didn't write it down) it's also the only car I use dino in currently.

It was an Ebay mistake. Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. wife fell in love with it. "doctor-owned". pictured in front of their million dollar+ home. etc. I know.... I know.... it goes against all of my better judgement. I wear the tie of shame... at least it makes a great beater. our babysitter also drove it for a year.

Life is life i guess, consider trading it in on something you actually want?

And it's nice to have a beater sometimes :P

Is it valves or cyl/rings?

Doesn`t Ebay offer a money back guarantee if the vehicle isn`t delivered as described in the ad?

I tried going that route - advertised as "doctor-owned" and "always dealer-maintained" and great condition etc. "just checked by the dealer and anything that needed repair was replaced"
at delivery: air bag light was on, A/C didn't work, exhaust manifold leak, one bad headlight (housing was trashed), muffler was rotted out, and it had the "Jeep death wobble" where if you hit a bump at highway speed the whole truck starts shaking violently until you slow down to about 20. I didn't discover the low compression until much later. actually just left it parked for a year until I had time to fix things.

nope. tried to make a claim with ebay. the most they did was kick the user off. big deal. ebay's fine print basically said they only cover engine and transmission, and even then there was enough fine print and enough conditions that it woulda been hard to collect.

as far as rings vs. valves - I didn't bother to check.

same thing happened to me when I bought a Land Rover on Ebay...body damage, dead battery, bad exhaust (cats fried) and burned oil to the tune of 600 miles to a quart....oh and I too had leaky exhaust manifold-no inspect, no buy for me!

Doctor owned just means that he had no clue about what was under that hood...

My Dad had to service a brand new Camry with just over 23000mi, the owner an Indian Lady, working as a Doctor at a local hospital complained aobut engine shutting off out of nowhere and unable to restart...

Turns out the motor sceised up and shot a piston out the bottom...

When he asked of the last oil change, she replied, "OIL CHANGE? Whats that?

The car made it 23K on the factory fill...

Never buy a car owned by people that know nothing about cars. At least get good dealer records.

We recently got a 01 Windstar owned by a elderly couple, tore out the engine to replace a few things, and the motor looked like new, the car is clean inside and out and you can tell based on the way the car feels and looks. Oil was changed 2 times a year with very few miles on it...

I'd go with elderly folks (especially veterans) over doctors when it comes to car maintenance

As much as I feel bad for that car, I wanna say that if the stealership was doing it's job, it would have stuck an oil change reminder on the windshield. Then MAYBE, the owner would have glanced at it at one point and avoided this problem.

sounds like a good candidate for additives for a before and after test.

as far as oil changes, I like dealers who offer the first oil change for free and then offer some incentive for returning. actually, my local chevy dealer has lifetime free oil changes. kinda hard to believe that the camry owner didn't get hounded by service flyers from her dealer, as I get them constantly

The seller must have had some nerve to flash the "doctor" credential as if it had any bearing on his ability to take care of a car.

Did the guy make any claim to the car being in a condition that you found it not to be in? IF so then you should look into small clams court.

funny stuff about auto abuse but how true...i loved the indian doctor who went 23 k on new car before engine gave out..i guess the 22$ super tech oil change and opening owners manual for [censored] of it was out of question...she ought to have them put in a crate engine and have a do over....the big house and jeep with zero maint, i hope you didnt pay too much

remind never to buy a car off a clueless doctor... i bought a ford and pontiac last 3 years and the stealerships are constantly emailing me about getting "serviced" and i would not doubt if the good doctors yota SS did same thing...GM is giving pontiac owners 4 free OCs and 27 point inspections for 2010

i sold my cavalier to my useless friend w/ 150k...at 185 k cars motor still runs great but i have to get on him about checking and changing oil..it also had a new battery and plat plugs in it too...he is one of those guys who adds oil when engine knocks if not prodded
