Just got my Toyota Estima (aka Previa in some places), with a 7 CVT transmission.

Any idea if any oil company makes an ATF for this CVT? How about Toyota?

CVTs have pushed materials and lubricants so far that it would unwise to deviate from the manufacturers lube until someone else has established a good track record for several years with their CVT lubes.

CVTs have been around since 1908. But it's just in the past few years that materials, design, manufacturing and lubricants got to the point where CVTs were practical in cars.

This is a car you bought - right? Did you get an owners manual with the car? Does the owners manual mention anything about the transmission?

What is recommended in the manual with regards to fluid maintenance and fluid type?

Not sure. Toyota CVT still fairly new here.

Yes, bought the car brand new. However, only comes with Japanese Manual, as it is sold by Parallel Importer in Singapore. Most parallel importers will bring in the JDM (Japanese Domestic Model), which is slightly different from what the Main Distributor in the Singapore markets.

It depends on what kind of CVT is it. If it is the belt and pulley type CVT that VW and Nissan uses, DO NOT USE ANYTHING OTHER THAN OEM FLUID. They contain a crystaline structure additives that when under stress, will bite into the metal for additional friction. Failure to use this kind of fluid will cause the belt to slip and kill the transmission in extreme cases. You may be able to get by with regular Dexron type ATF, but I wouldn't run it day to day.

Toyota's CVT in their hybrid uses gears and 2 electric motor to adjust gear ratio, there are no belts or clutches. I would imagine it can run almost anything in the right viscosity and additive types. Not sure about their minivan's CVT, so you should check if they are the right type.

Hmm.... the trouble is finding out about the transmission for the model that I have, as they are by the parallel importers, and not the main distributor here.
The main distributor imports only the 4-speed auto model

It seems like Toyota has 2 generations of CVT that are different in design. If I were you I wouldn't guess on what they use and would send an email to the corporate tech support and ask for what kind of fluid they use.
