UnDummy mentioned he was doing this....Car specs M-V MAzda fluid or FNR5. Merc V can be used at reduced intervals. I know AT+4 is a quality fluid, so what about using this in this trans? Interested in comments, especially from unDummy.

Thanks.

Because ATF+4 is better then MerconV, lasts longer for those negligent OE change intervals, shifts smoother, and is a higher percentage of 'selected' basestocks and not a blend like MerconV.

THe Mazda/Ford spec is similar to the J-matic used by Nissan and Subaru. Probably a different supplier meeting the same specs. No different then what those certain English/German automakers specs for some of their supposedly lifetime smooth shifting ATF.

I've used ATF+4 long term. It works great. But, I do not take any responsibility for a non-OE spec'd ATF.

BTW, even thought there is a Mazda letter stating that M-V is MerconV, it is NOT. I have no problem with using MerconV as long as you seriously cut the recommended change intervals.

So...you think it would be a good option in this transmission? I thought it might, only because I know ATF+4 is a quality fluid. I realize M-V is not Merc V. Given a choice, unDummy...ATF+4 or Merc V?

which is equivilant to 3309. mazda had a parts flash when that trans first came out stating to use 3309, volvo transmission fluid or motorcraft fnr5 fluid until mazda could get their own stuff out to dealers. they stated all were the same fluid.

How are you so certain?

Ever consider that the additive packages are DIFFERENT and may not be compatible?

You got anything to back that up? I have scoured the net for over a year now regarding the FNR5 and ATF. According to Mobil, they don't have a fluid that meets the spec.

Now 3309 is listed for use with the 6spd ATX that mazda uses. That ATX is "not" the 5spd FNR5.

Badtlc...I agree with you here! :) I've never seen that 3309 is the same as FNR5/M-V.

In regard to you asking me why I would want to use ATF+4 here...I know, from UnDummy, that FNR5 is basically a "lifetime" ATF and there is nothing special about it. On top of that, all of the universal ATF's compatible for this unit spec they are also for use in ATF+4 applications. I'm of the opinion that many of the ATF's aren't THAT different. FNR5 was nothing special when new, and Amsoil ATF smoothed things out for me. Do I think ATF+ might just provide the same results from an off of the shelf product? Just maybe...can't do any harm!

My Mazda states 3309 for the AT so that is what I will use A "quality" ATF may be quality but if it does not meet the vehicles requirement then don't use it or suffer the consequences. Why the bleep would anyone use a non approved fluid in their vehicle with remanufactured cost $3,500? or more?

Well...I am not so sure how quality FNR5 is either. I've read a lot on how ATF+4 is a great, almost universal ATF.

UnDummy will be back, I am sure. Again..if a universal such as Amsoil works so well, why wouldn't a quality OEM. I don't sleep any better at night knowing there is FNR5 in mine...

It's great for Chryslers, but perhaps not for Fords.

There is only a select handful of individuals who think that ATF+4 is an universal fluid. Yet, those are the same individuals who seem to be willing to pour tractor fluid into their transmission if the label said synthetic.
