Are There Any Good Fram Oil Filters ?

The orange can is "good" just not a great value although with all the torn media pics from a major competitors filter that is about 50 cents less, they are looking like a better buy than they used to IMO. Anyway I will run them without hesitation when the price is right and have used them for over 30 years without issue.

The Tough Guards and Ultras are excellent filters, with the Tough Guard being my favorite filter bar none for longer OCI's. A legit 10k filter with 99% efficiency for 6 bucks, what's not to like?

Don't believe the silly internet hate, most of which is hysteria parroted by people who couldn't even explain to you what a bypass valve does.

Is there any big difference between XG and Ultra at this point? The prices are exactly the same (Ultra in the "normal size" for my G37 is same price as XG for my truck/oversized)

I wanted to order a few using a coupon, but if Ultra is still better then I wont place my order with Advance.

The "Extended Guard" is basically an older model of the Ultra. Both the Extended Guard and the Ultra use the "XG" prefix on the filter number. The Ultra was basically an improvement tweak to the Extended Guard, where the Ultra's efficiency and mileage rating increased over the Extended Guard.

So the bottom line is, buy the Ultra if you want the latest and greatest "XG" filter from FRAM.

I use PH25's all the time and my '62 Buick is still going.

Just some added info ... the Extended Guard is no longer made, and any out in the stores area old stock that never sold out before the Ultra hit the shelves.

With the prices and model numbers being identical I had a feeling that was the case. I bet if I ordered a bunch of XG7317 today Id be picking up the Ultras and not the Extended Guard shown on Advance's website.

Since the coupons only really work online I might do a fly by on the store first to see if in fact all they have are Ultras then Ill place my order when I get home.

Too bad they didnt clearance price them or something

I dont come near time or mileage on my oil and filter before changing, so Extended Guard would be just fine for my application if it was cheap.

You are way too funny!. I keep trying though. As a professional auto tech by trade, I never knew there was so much voodoo around oil filters. When I first started at FRAM, they all wanted to know "what kind of oil filters does a master mechanic use"? My rely- good ones.
Meaning well known brand names, same with oil. When I was asked why, I responded because I knew that in the event of a problem, I knew I could find the company and they would likely stand behind their products

I never got the hoopla at all. I have personally installed Frams on all kinds of cars, trucks, vans, even motorcycles and ATV's.

Never a hiccup. People may have issues with them but we never did, even in off road racing for years...

Yes, the DW filters labelled made in usa are FRAM. I am not privy to what part numbers those may be.
LCR is third gen political correctness. First it was "made in ch!na', then made "offshore", today in the corporate world, the term is "low cost region", unless the low cost region is the USA, then of course it's made in USA.
We are trying very hard to get 100% of the DW business from Advance, it is being worked on right now.

The made in USA DW filters - what Fram are they equivalent to? (if you are allowed to say)

Interesting, never seen an other than made in China, metal end cap, coil retainer spring, cello wrapped base construction DW spin on oil filter posted here (bitog). If/when it is, afaik it will be the first.

As for COO or country of origin, while LCR may be the pc term in the corporate world, in the bitog world made in China has been just that and being pc is extraneous. And from a historical perspective, subsequent preparation for flogging is useful.

All of them are generally good enough.

Some of them are actually very good (Ultra).

The debate is usually whether there is something better available at a given price point.

FRAM earns it OCOD label every now and then....like the Cummins issue about a decade ago with the PH3976 to PH3976A change.

I don't believe any knowledgable RAM owner with a Cummins 5.9 or 6.7 L diesel would risk putting one on their truck.

There are just better options out there for this application.

+1 ...

The early Wix filter's failed sporadically in that application as well.

Huh, wonder if this is why some models of DriveWorks started appearing in black cans rather than white. I'll take a look next time I'm at AAP.

Thanks for the info MotorKing -- I understand if you can't / won't discuss further than that

I've been using them since I was in my 20's, and I am 61 now. I have had no problems with them. Some on here hate them, but I think it is mostly a bandwagon thing. I use them with confidence. Nothing is perfect, any brand will likely experience an occasional failure, but Fram has served me a many a year.
